  1. Environment Environnement Canada Canada Environment Canada “The Canadian AMDAR Program” Gilles Verner, Yulia Zaitseva, Réal Sarrazin / Gilles Fournier Canadian Meteorological Centre / AMWSD EC GLFE-TAMDAR Presentation

  2. Status of Canadian AMDAR Program Development EC GLFE-TAMDAR Presentation

  3. Development with First Air • TAMDAR/ISAT/Internet proof-of-concept system on test B727 producing data to CMC • Ground-based QA/QC of TAMDAR data conducted by Skytrac • An AirDat engineer to calibrate TAMDAR before CMC evaluate quality of data • If test is positive plan is to deploy 7 more aircraft by 31 March 2006, and 7 remaining aircraft by 31 March 2007, each to be calibrated and tested before becoming operational EC GLFE-TAMDAR Presentation

  4. Typical daily coverage - test B727 EC GLFE-TAMDAR Presentation

  5. Development with AC Jazz • Jazz contributing about 25,000 daily AMDAR observations of wind and temperature from a fleet of 25 CRJ-200 and 32 upgraded DHC-8-100 and -300 aircraft to 67 destinations in Canada and the United States (4 August 2005) • Sabre C&C not expected to work fully before October 2005 • DHC-8 temperature data quality depends on phase of flight. Is believed to be due to T smoothing algorithm. Next upgrade opportunity by Universal Avionics is August 2006 • 25 Air Canada CRJ-100s and 8 CRJ-200 from Independence Air to go to Jazz • Jazz acquiring 15 brand new CRJ-705 by 31 December 2005 with an option for 8 more. Rockwell Collins to extend AMDAR with access to roll and pitch angles to the CRJ-705 • By mid-May 2006, Jazz to operate 68 DHC-8 and 73 CRJ aircraft, all AMDAR-capable EC GLFE-TAMDAR Presentation

  6. AeroMechanical Services • Alternative AMDAR system using AMS’ Automated Flight Information Reporting System (AFIRS) / Uptime installed on 3 Hawkair DHC-8 and 2 Canadian North B737-200 • AMS deployed Harco temperature probe on the DHC-8 and CMC receiving data only from 1 of the 3 DHC-8. Not enough data collected yet to evaluate the quality of T • The 2 equipped Canadian North B737-200s servicing the North display extremely high wind bias resulting from both the aircraft’s navigational equipment and the way the aircraft are navigated in Northern Domestic Airspace. Solutions may not be economical EC GLFE-TAMDAR Presentation

  7. Development with Westjet • WestJet now ready to join the Canadian AMDAR Program • ACARS-based with SITA service • Will be operating 54 B737-NG by end of 2005 • However 12-month delay expected in delivery of upgraded FDAMS/ACMS by Honeywell EC GLFE-TAMDAR Presentation

  8. Monitoring of GLFE-TAMDAR at CMC EC GLFE-TAMDAR Presentation

  9. TAMDAR wind and temperature • Monthly mean values of observation minus first guess • Observations for all monitoring period (December 2004 - July 2005) • Slight deterioration of wind data from April to July
