  2. Intro Acts 11:17 (NKJ) 17. If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God? Acts 11:17 (NAS) 17. Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way? • The context of Peter’s question… • Peter asked this question to the Jews (Acts 11:2) who questioned him for entering a Gentile’s house and preaching to him and his household. • In Acts 10 Peter and six Jews entered the house of Cornelius, a Gentile, and preached the gospel to them. • Holy Spirit confirmed they could receive blessings in Christ (Acts 10:47). • Cornelius and his household were baptized and saved! (Acts 10:48) • In Jerusalem the Jews accused him, “You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.” (Acts 11:3) • Peter began at the beginning to explain he was sent by God and that they were witnesses to God’s approval of Gentile converts. (Acts 11:4-16) Peter Would Not “Withstand” God

Intro • Peter’s question, “Who was I that I could withstand • God?” (NKJV) justified his actions • “Withstand” = “to stand against, to oppose or resist, with either physical or moral force.” • G2967 koluo: “to prevent, to stop (by word or force), stand against, oppose, withstand.” To “stand in God’s way” (NAS) would have been to “oppose or stand against” God! Peter would not “withstand” (oppose) God, but yet so many people in the world do! Peter Would Not “Withstand” God

One Who Refuses to “Withstand” God Demonstrates… • Man’s weakness and God’s strength • I Cor. 1:25; Acts 10:35; Is. 55:8-9 To not “withstand” God is to recognize His strength and our weaknesses! • Man’s submission and God’s authority • Acts 10:19-20, 28-29 (Acts 10:9-16); Acts 10:34-35, 47-48 Acts 10:47-48 47 “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” 48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days. To not “withstand” God is to submit to Him! Peter Would Not “Withstand” God

One Who Refuses to “Withstand” God Demonstrates… • An explanation for one’s obedience to the Gospel • Why did Peter “order” Cornelius’ household to be baptized into Christ? • He submitted to the will of God – Didn’t give in to prejudices! (10:29) • Why did Cornelius and his family obey the command to be baptized? • They submitted to the will of God and obeyed the conditions for salvation – Mk. 16:16; Acts 2:38 • Why did you become a Christian? (Acts 11:26) • To not “withstand” God, but submit to His will • Why do you strive to live faithfully and be Christ-like? (Titus 2:11-12) • A refusal to “withstand” God, but be God-like! (I Cor. 11:1; Eph. 5:1) To not “withstand” God is to obey the gospel! Submitting to God’s will is refusing to “stand against” and “withstand” God! Peter Would Not “Withstand” God

One Who Tries to “Withstand” God Demonstrates… • There are some who think they only withstand the • preacher, elders, or deacons when they refuse to • assemble or live godly lives • When we refuse the will of God in any way we are opposing God! • Ungrateful • Jn. 3:16; Heb. 10:12; Lk. 17:17; I Thess. 5:18; Rom. 1:21; II Tim. 3:2 The ungrateful withstand God! • Foolish • Lk. 12:20; Mt. 7:24-27; Ps. 14:1-3 The foolish withstand God! It is ungrateful and foolish to deny the will of God and refuse to obey Him! Peter Would Not “Withstand” God

  7. Conclusion Peter’s question justified his actions, in that he submitted to God, rather than “withstand” Him • People need to learn from Peter’s example and submit to the will of God! (Acts 11:17) • Acts 11:18: Peter’s question led the Jews to glorify God in the acceptance of the Gentiles • The Jewish converts listened to Peter and would not “withstand” God! Acts 11:17-18 17 Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” 18 When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, “Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life.” Peter Would Not “Withstand” God

  8. Conclusion Those who withstand God will suffer eternally – Mt. 25:41, 46; II Thess. 1:7-9 Those foolish to not obey according to God’s way are as guilty as those who never obey! Man will not stand in God’s way, for judgment will happen just as He has promised! Let us never attempt to withstand God but always strive to do His will in all things! Peter Would Not “Withstand” God

  9. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
