This report outlines the goals and outcomes of a medical education block focusing on infectious processes and immune responses. Key learning topics include the clinical presentations of elevated temperature, sore throat, and skin lesions, as well as the histological features and healing processes of the skin. Pharmacological, nutritional, and epidemiological aspects are also addressed. Assessment methods include quizzes and a comprehensive block exam, with feedback highlighting strengths and areas for improvement in teaching methods. Future changes aim to enhance problem sets and interactive discussions.

Block Goals • Major objective: build students’ medical knowledge of infectious processes and immune defenses to infection. • Main Learning topics • infectious or immune mediated causes of the clinical presentations of “elevated temperature”, “sore throat”, and “skin lesions/rash”. • histological features and functions of the skin including healing processes • pharmacological agents, nutritional influences, epidemiological principles, and preventive medicine/public health issues relevant to the items above. • physiological regulation of body temperature and mechanisms that alter body temperature, including fever responses.
2008 4 modules Elevated Temp. Sore Throat Skin Lesions/Rash Abnormal WBC count 2009 3 modules Elevated Temp. Sore Throat Skin Lesions/Rash Changes in 2009 vs. 2008
Assessment • 10% graded S&I quizzes • 10% graded problem sets/labs(4) NEW! • 80% Block Exam. • 3-4 test items per LT selected • 158 items (13 image–based lab/clinical items, 1 short essay item) • Clinical scenarios (21%), clinical context (27%).
Student Performance • Block Exam • Mean score = 79 ± 6.5 (82.2% in 2008) • Range = 59.9 - 92.4 • 7 students below 70% • 1 student below 60% • Course Grade • Mean score = 81.7 ± 5.3 • Range = 66.3 - 92.9 • 3 students below 70% (2 in 2008) • 2 scheduled to reassess
Feedback • Positive • Self assessment quizzes • Microbiology laboratory • Problem sets (±) • Turning Point questions in lectures • Negative • Unevenly distributed activities (Week 3 too heavy with material) • Excessive assigned readings • Sequence of lectures (±) • S&I sessions
Problems • 3 day module due to Blood Block exam and Veteran’s Day! • Block split over Thanksgiving holiday and Winter/Fall terms • Zero submission on Blackboard of “unresolved issues” from CBL groups • Minimally interactive S&I sessions
Changes for 2010 • More Challenging problem sets • More Challenging S&I cases and quizzes. • Alter Dermatology LTs and focus content of Skin Lesions/rash module • Stimulate S&I discussion of CBL cases or other issues. • Rearrange Fall term CPPH activities
