FP7: Cooperation Programme – Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Biotechnology • Activity 1:Sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forest and aquatic environments • Activity 2:“Fork to Farm”: Food (including seafood), health and well-being • Activity 3:Life sciences, biotechnology and biochemistry for sustainable non-food products and processes • Overall Budget: € 1.9 billion (2007-2013)

FP7: Cooperation Programme - Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Biotechnology – Activity 1 Sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forest and aquatic environments • Aquatic-based biological resources: • sustainability and competitiveness of fisheries providing the scientific and technical basis for fisheries management • support to the sustainable development of aquaculture, including breeding and welfare • the development of tools needed by policy-makers and others, in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture and rural and coastal development • works on the socio-economic and ethical context of production

FP7: Cooperation Programme - Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Biotechnology – Activity 2 “Fork to Farm”: Food (including seafood), health and well-being • consumer, societal, cultural, industrial and health as well as traditional aspects of food and feed, including behavioural & cognitive sciences • nutrition research works on diet-related diseases and disorders and the prevention of diseases • innovative food and feed processing technologies enhancing safety assurance methodologies and the integrity of the food chain • improving quality and safetyin food, beverages and feeds and development of new ingredients and products • environmental impactson and of food and feed chains and their interactions with global change; total food chain concept, traceability and authenticity of food

FP7: Cooperation Programme - Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Biotechnology – Activity 3 Life sciences, biotechnology and biochemistry for sustainable non-food products and processes • Improvement of raw materials and biomass • research for improved crops, forest products, feed-stocks, marine products and biomass for energy, the environment and high value-added products • Bioprocesses and products based on renewable resources • novel farming systems, bio-process and bio refinery concepts, and bio-catalysis • new and improved microorganisms and enzymes • Environmental biotechnology • utilisation of agro-industrial wastes and by-products • environmental bio-remediation • cleaner bio processing

Participants: • Enterprises, Research institutions, universities, associations, public authorities, etc. Minimal requirements: • 15% of the programme budget for SME-participation • Small-/medium-sized projects 3 participants from 3 different EU-countries • Large Scale Integrating Projects 10 participants from 10 countries EC-contributions: • Standard contribution for R&D activities: 50%but: SME, public institutions, universities, R&D organisations: 75% • Standard contribution for demonstration projects: 50% Budget: • Small and medium sized projects = 1-3.5 mill. Euro • Large projects = 10-15 mill. Euro

FP7: Call for Proposals Draft Calendar • Publication of the next call: end of July 2010 • Projects within the two stage application/approval procedure: • Deadline for project ideas in short version until November/December 2010 • Second stage with full project proposals according to accessment feedback (as of Spring 2011) • Projects within the one stage application/approval procedure • Deadline for full project proposals approx. mid January 2011

FP7 Example: CoralFISH Assessment of the interaction between corals, fish and fisheries • Objectives: • Observation of protected areas • Research on deep-water bottom fish and corals • Development of monitoring and predictive modelling tools for ecosystem based management • Production of habitat suitability maps to identify areas likely to contain vulnerable habitat • Lead Partner:National University of Ireland • Partners: (16) FRA, GER, GBR, GRE, IRL, ISL, ITA, NED, NOR, POR • Total Budget: 10.89 million Euro (6.5 million Euro funding) • Duration: 48 months (2008-2012) • Project website:www.eu-fp7-coralfish.net

FP7 Example: ComENVIR Communicating environmental impacts on water quality, availability and use • Objectives: • empower citizens to engage in scientific dialogue/debate • inform consumers of the latest scientific advances in the food sec. • strengthen scientific education in classrooms and promote scientific curiosity among the youth • narrowing the gap between environmental research and citizens  two specific target groups • covering environmental stressors, waste treatment, health effects, biodiversity, risks  role of water quality in its different environmental locations (fresh water, marine, soil, air) • Lead Partner: Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany • Partners: (9)GER, IRL, ITA, NED, NOR, ESP • Total Budget: 961,990 Euro (871,620 million Euro funding) • Duration: 48 months (2009-2013)

EU-Programme: LIFE+ • Life+ components: • LIFE+ Nature and Biodiversity • LIFE+ Environment Policy and Governance • LIFE+ Information and Communication • Duration: 1.1.2007 to 31.12.2013 • Co-financing rate: generally 50% (possible up to 75%) • European project partners not obligatory but nice to have • Focus on: • sustainable long-term investments in Natura 2000 sites, incl. coastal and marine habitat and species • conservation actions for species targeted by the Birds’ and Habitats’ directives • projects to “demonstrate best practice” • European benefit to be proven

LIFE+: Environmental Policy and Governance • Objective: contribute to the development and demonstrating innovative policy approaches, technologies,methods and instruments • Principal priority 'Water': contribute to enhanced water quality by developing cost-effective measures to achieve good ecological status • Priority areas of action: • enhancing science-policy integration and transfer of results for preparing river basin management plans • contributing to the implementation of the EU Thematic Strategy on the protection and conservation of the marine environment • hydro morphological features such as restoring floodplains and other measures in support of a directive on the assessment and management of flood risks
