  1. The Significance Of A Microwave Oven Cavity

  2. In the present age, a microwave oven forms part of the fundamental kitchen wares. As an electrical device, the models available in market are countless. Different microwave features cater for different qualities kitchen needs. Among the many features is the microwave cavity. The cavity determines energy consumption of the oven.

  3. Background information Microwaves are generated by magnetrons which are stimulated by electricity. The electromagnetic waves pass through food molecules placed in the oven. The moisture in food is vibrated by these waves and that is how food gets heated. Because it is the electromagnetic waves that generate heat, they need an enclosure that prevents heat leakage so as to save on energy. Indiscriminate wastage of electric current can lead to health risks and also raise electricity bills in a household. The microwave cavity plays an important role as far as energy usage is concerned.

  4. The role of the cavity is not only holding food in the oven but also to inhibit loss of microwaves produced in the oven. The oven’s inside box ensures that the electromagnetic waves get reflected back over and over. In a design whereby the cavity is weak to support the endless reflections of waves, energy gets lost and leaks outside.

  5. Types of microwave oven cavities There are two major types of cavities namely ceramic cavity and stainless cavity. Before getting into cavity details, it should be noted that food is heated as a result of electromagnetic waves generated by magnetron, and the waves agitate water molecules in the food hence raising their energy levels. The oven’s cavity walls keep the microwaves in place so that they do not escape outside the oven.

  6. Stainless steel cavity Stainless steel is a good heat conductor. It therefore enables efficient food heating. Stainless steel microwave oven is the best protector against loss of electromagnetic waves. However, stainless steel often gets scratches hence its appearance gets damaged easily. Due to the high efficiency in energy consumption offered by stainless steel microwaves, the cost of these appliances is higher than the counterparts. Ceramic cavity Ceramic material is commonly used in cook wares due to its exquisite feature of non-stickiness. Therefore, ceramic cavities are easy to clean. It is also lustrous hence the great physical appeal. There are some brands that produce ceramic microwave ovens with anti-bacterial covers on the oven hence improving kitchen health. Since ceramic is a poor conductor of electricity, an oven takes long before food heats evenly.

  7. Final thoughts The two types of ovens- ceramic and stainless steel microwave ovens- come in all designs with distinct features for the convenience of consumers. As far as energy usage is concerned, it is advisable to choose stainless steel microwaves so as to minimize electric current used by the oven and subsequent eergy bill in a household.
