Address Allocation Issues Phil DeMar Summer 2009 ESCC meeting July 24, 2009
ARIN Announcement • IPv4 address depletion letter of 5/12/09: • IPv4 addresses expected to run out in ~2yrs • Recommendation: migrate to IPv6 • Sent to Lab Directors • Considered advisory information • But remaining IPv4 address allocations will require documented need
Any ESCC Role Here? • S Bradley: • “Do we need a common message to our Directors or the NLCIO?” • P. DeMar: • “Do we need a collective analysis of the IPv4/IPv6 address situation?” • Might include (for example): • ARIN IPv4 address situation • ESnet IPv4 CIDR block situation • Projected site demands for additional IPv4 address space • Address exhaustion techniques (eg., NAT) • IPv6 considerations
Site ARIN Registry Actions? • Legacy Registration Services Agreement (LRSA): • Sites who have signed the agreement? • IPv6 RSA: • Sites who successfully obtained a provider-independent (PI) address block? • Opportunities to capitalize on successful ARIN registration agreements?
