The role of expatriate training • According to Tung’s study, the percentage of MNCs providing expatriate training is as follows: • American MNCs: 32% • European MNCs: 69% • Japanese MNCs: 57%
According to GMAC Survey figures, the availability of CCT in MNCs was as follows (in 2004) : • Employee and spouse: 27% • The whole family: 28% • For employee only: 5% • For none: 40%
Components of effective pre-departure training programs Cultural Awareness Programs: Training on culture-related issues depends on: 1. Expected interaction between the employee and the members of host culture 2. Degree of similarity between the individual’s culture and that of the host country
The program should focus on: • Life-long learning • Foreign Language Training • Emphasis not just on being bilingual but also on being bi-cultural • Helping managers manage diversity
