  2. Topic 1: 200 • Question: Who was Frederick Douglass • Answer: He was an escaped slave who fled North and lived with his free wife. While enslaved, he managed to learn to read and write. He became an icon of the abolitionist movement for his moving speeches denouncing the institution of slavery. Also, he published a newspaper called the North Star (For additional information see page 245) Back

Topic 1: 400 • Question: Define Gradualism • Answer:In this theory/strategy for ending slavery, Slaveholders would be compensated for their loss of slave(s) • Supporters of gradualism thought this would give the South’s economy time to adjust to the loss of enslaved labor • This strategy would end slavery gradually(slowly) (see page 242) Back

Who supported this strategy (name at least 2 individuals )? • Answer: • The first antislavery societies believed that ending slavery would not end racism in the United States • Many thought the best solution to ending U.S. slavery was to send African Americans back to their ancestral homelands in Africa • December 1816 antislavery reformers created the American Colonization Society (ACS) to move African Americans to Africa • Supporters included: James Madison, James Monroe, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and John Marshall Back

(Provide at least two reasons) • Answer: • Despite the founding of Liberia colonization was never a realistic solution: 1)Cost of transporting African Americans was too high 2)The ACS relied on donations 3)Moving the 1.5 million Africans Americans to Africa was nearly impossible 4)Also, most African Americans regarded the U.S. as their home and di not want to move Back

Topic 2: 200 • Question: What did abolitionists believe about slavery? • Answer: • They believed it was a sin (this idea came from the second great awakening) • Also, abolitionists argued that enslaved African Americans should be freed immediately without gradual measures or compensation (see pages 243-244) Back

  8. Topic 2: 600 • Question: This woman was an abolitionist who was freed, when the state of New York decided to free all remaining slaves in 1827. In the 1840’s she drew huge crowds with her anti-slavery speeches. • Answer: Sojourner Truth Back

  10. Topic 3: 200 • Question: Who was Lucretia Mott • Answer: Mott-a women’s rights advocate (supporter) -often spoke out in favor of abolitionism as well Back

  11. Topic 3: 400 • Question: What did a slave catcher do and how did Northerners feel about them? • Answer: they were individuals who would travel North to catch escaped slaves in exchange for a monetary($$$) reward. Northerners hated slave catchers. Back

  12. Topic 3: 600 • Question: In 1836 under pressure from Southerners, the House of Representatives passed a gag rule. What did this mean? • Answer: all abolitionist petitions (formal requests in this case to end slavery) would be shelved without debate (see page 247) Back

  17. Topic 4: 800 • Question: What was the North’s reaction to abolitionism • Answer: While many northerners were opposed to slavery, many did not favor abolitionism. Some were bankers that feared with the ending of slaver southern farmers would not be able to pay back debts owed to Northern banks. Others feared war. Back
