  2. Popular Sovereignty • The government is created for the people, by the people, power is held by the people, not the government. • In a representative democracy (republic), the people vote to elect leaders to represent their interests.

  3. Rule of Law • People and the government follow a set of laws equally, no one is above the law. • The Constitution sets limits to governmental power (term limits, checks and balances) and establishes how leaders who overstep their power can be removed.

  4. Separation of Powers & Checks and Balances • Powers and responsibilities are divided among the legislative, executive and judicial branches to prevent any one branch from having too much power. • Each branch has the ability the check and monitor the power of the other and prevent any abuse of power.

  5. Federalism • Power is divided between the national (federal)government and the regional (state and local) governments.

  6. Independent Judiciary • Judicial branch is established as an independent entity, free of pressures and influences from the other two branches. Judges are not beholden to political parties, election results, or anything other than the Constitution and U.S. law. • The Supreme Court is the highest court in the land.

  7. Individual Rights • The Bill of Rights and the Constitution protect the rights and liberties of individuals against government.
