  1. Klaus • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqd4aPs5WTA Klaus obviously did not study the OH&S guidelines! You are part of the SAFE@WORK committee and have been asked to assess some potential risks in the work place. The first one has been done for you.

  2. What information do you have on each hazard? Who will be exposed to the hazard and for how long? What will the consequences be if the hazard to health actually causes AN Injury or harm to health? How do you rate this risk? Hazards: Risk Assessment and Control To carry out a basic risk assessment Follow the four steps STEP 1: INFORMATION Gather information about each hazard identified. STEP 2: LIKELIHOOD Think about how many young people are likely to be exposed to each hazard and for how long. You need to take into account the different situations/conditions that may exist in your workplace that may increase the likelihood, such as a change to operations, inspection, cleaning, maintenance, servicing and repair, new or inexperienced staff. STEP 3: CONSEQUENCES Use the information to assess the consequences of each hazard. Fatality Major injuries (significant long term effects) Minor injuries (usually requiring several days off work) Negligible injuries (maybe first aid) STEP 4: RATING THE RISK Use the risk table on the next page to work out the risk associated with each hazard.

  3. Risk Assessment Chart Scenario: You are in a large factory and are listening to loud music in your ears. You decided to go and get some parts from the large shelves. Spot the risks (list) Assess the risks (describe) Make the changes (Eliminate, substitute, isolate, add safeguards, use safest way, use protective equipment)

  4. Risk Assessment Chart Scenario: Frayed electrical cord.

  5. Risk Assessment Chart Scenario: Students have a disagreement in the school yard and this turns physical.

  6. Risk Assessment Chart Scenario: A group of students are working in the kitchen cooking lunch without knowing how to use the equipment.

  7. Essential vocabulary • Don’t look stupid in the workforce when your boss or the OH&S rep asks you about these words. Save this to your desk top and then send to your teacher pleasewith definitions or pictures to show you understand the meaning. • E.g. ear plug:
