  3. Plan for Food and thinking about Nutrition • What would be good foods for our backyard campout dinner that use food from different parts of the food pyramid. At the campout, we will draw pictures of what we eat and paste them on a giant food pyramid. • What is your favorite healthy food- bring it and bring ENOUGH of it to share at the campout • Why is it good for each person to bring something that is THEIR favorite? • Arriving at 5:30, how will the meal ‘happen’? Who will do what? What comes first, next? • Each boy must make his own breakfast independently. What will your breakfast be? How many food groups does it include? Bring the food you will need for YOUR breakfast. • 5. To start a 9:00 hike, what time will you need to start making breakfast?

  4. Plan for evening activities and Sleeping • How is a backyard campout the same or different from a sleepover inside? • What will we need to be comfortable at a backyard campout.? • What do you think each ‘camper’ needs to bring? • What are good games from the cub scout book or web sites that we could play? • HOW WILL YOU decide how to play one game suggested by each scout.

  5. Plan for the Hike –BEFORE AND for during the hike plan • Belt Loop-(Zane will work toward pin and others can as well if interested. He has beltloop) • Explain the hiking safety rules to your den leader or adult partner. Practice these rules while on a hike. • Hiking Safety • What is the buddy system. • Dress properly for the weather and environment. • Wear sun and insect protection • Take an extra pair of socks in case you need to change. • Obey traffic signs and signals. • Avoid hiking along roadways. • Stay on the trail. • Be alert to your surroundings. • Don't litter as you hike. • Be alert to dangerous animals, insects, and plants. Never touch a wild animal. • Take 1 pint of water for each hour you will be hiking. Never drink untreated water. • Demonstrate proper hiking attire and equipment. • What kinds of plants and animals might we see? What do we have to do to take care of them? • What is ‘Leave No Trace’- what can we do on the hike to work towards this? What will we need to take?

  6. Plan for Cleaning and Leaving • You must be ready to depart at 10:30. When will you ‘pack up’ your gear? • What do you think will be the hardest part of the campout? • What do you think will be the best part? • What did we forget?

  7. Set up tents, prepare Food, Games, talking, sleeping, prepare food, hiking What else? Leave No Trace and Clean up your own things are important things to remember We also need to plant- Where could we plant in Akela Jeff’s house? Questions we still have? Can we build a fire? Who will sleep in my tent? How should we decide this? What if we feel scared? How can we help each other? What will we eat at Kermess after the campout?
