Temperance Movement
The Temperance Movement emerged in the early 1800s as a response to the widespread use and abuse of alcohol, which reformers blamed for crime, poverty, and mental illness. Advocates called for moderation in drinking habits, while some argued for a complete ban on alcohol sales. Maine led the way by becoming the first state to enact prohibition laws, inspiring others to follow. However, most states eventually repealed these bans, reflecting the complex attitudes toward alcohol in society during that period.
