  3. I. DEFINING “COUNSELING.”

  4. A. Counseling is simply advice or GUIDANCE given by a knowledgeable person.

  5. B. Guidance or advice is necessary for EVERYONE.

  6. 1. Advice or guidance is simply the direction, INFORMATION, or opinion given from an individual who has more experience in a certain matter.

  7. II. DEFINING “PSYCHOLOGY.”

  8. A. “Psychology” is a PSEUDO-SCIENCE that deals with mental process and behavior.

  9. B. The Literal meaning of Psychology is the “study of the SOUL.”

  10. 1. There is only one true STANDARD and rule to develop a process of counseling: the Word of God – the final authority!

  11. a. True psychology and counseling should only be supported by BIBLICAL information, which would contain the truth about the soul.

  12. 2. Proud men who build shrines of stone or wood with their own hands, then bow down to it and worship it, calling it…

  13. …their creator, shows how CORRUPT such minds have become.

  14. C. The popular process of THERAPY is a trap.

  15. 1. Psychotherapy is the TREATMENT of mental and emotional problems through the use of psychological techniques.

  16. D. This is not to say that the use of social SCIENCES or common sense is not valid in counseling.

  17. 1. We should always judge spoken or written words by its content, and by the standard of the BIBLE.

  18. 2. The wisdom used for the purpose of instruction and counseling must be GODLY wisdom, and not man’s wisdom.

  19. III. SEEKING OUT ADVICE FROM THE UNGODLY OR EVIL MEDIUMS.

  20. A. Other MEDIUMS include evil advice from anyone.

  21. 1. Knowing this, if anyone gives advice that is CONTRARY to, or opposes, the Word of God, it is evil.

  22. 2. Humanism is a religion that worships MAN and his own intelligence.

  23. IV. THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF BIBLICAL COUNSELING.

  24. A. GOD gave counsel to Adam.

  25. B. ADAM counseled his wife, Eve.

  26. C. SATAN counseled Eve with evil advice.

  27. D. King Saul sought out EVIL counsel.

  28. E. King DAVID believed in Godly counsel.

  29. F. Jesus is the MODEL counselor.

  30. 1. The Counselor hears the CHARGES.

  31. 2. The Counselor does not lose control of His EMOTIONS.

  32. a. It is important that the counselor DISCERNS the real facts.

  33. 3. The Counselor CONFRONTS all the sinful behavior of all involved.

  34. 4. The Counselor seeks the counselee’s true INTENTIONS.

  35. 5. The Counselor imparts wise and godly COUNSEL to the counselee.

  36. G. We are SURROUNDED by good and bad counseling.

  37. 1. In our face-to-face CONVERSATIONS we counsel and are given counsel.

  38. 2. Parents counsel their CHILDREN.

  39. 3. Employers counsel their EMPLOYEES.

  40. 4. Pastors, preachers and teachers counsel from the PULPIT.

  41. 5. PROFESSIONAL services counsel their clients.

  42. 6. We receive counsel from the ENTERTAINMENT media.

  43. Chapter TwoTHE FOUNDATION OF BIBLICAL COUNSELING

  44. I. THE PRINCIPLES OF BIBLICAL COUNSELING.

  45. A. GOD must be at the center of counseling.

  46. 1. The final objective of every counselor, above everything else is that God, through JESUS CHRIST, is exalted.

  47. 2. The counselor must remember he is not responsible to the counselee, but answers directly to GOD.

  48. B. The true God is only revealed through JESUS CHRIST.
