  5. Why there are variations • Men are more likely to work in high risk industries • Risk taking behaviour an aggressiveness are more acceptable for men than women in Australia • Preference for certain activities • Mind set – some men think they are indestructible, which can lead to destructive behaviours, such as alcohol. Drugs, risk taking behaviours (binge drinking, driving) • Men are more likely to avoid medical treatment (due to marchioness, or not recognizing signs) • Unemployed men and uneducated men are more likely to get sick than unemployed women and uneducated men • Men are likely to resort to destructive behaviours to deal with depression – suicide • Men don’t eat as healthy or exercise as often as females

  6. Case Study • Read the Case Study on page 108 ‘National men’s health plan a first; suicide prevention study a priority’ • Answer Case study review questions 1-6

  7. Case study review: National men’s health plan a first; suicide prevention study a priority • Men are three times more likely to commit suicide. • Men are less likely to discuss their problems, more likely to choose violent methods for suicide, and may misuse drugs and alcohol at higher rates than females. • Farmers are more likely to commit suicide because of the stresses of the natural environment (drought, bushfires) and limited social support due to their isolation. • The three causes of death are AIDS (more than 90% of people who die from it are men), transport accidents (74% are men) and cancer of the oesophagus (69% who die are men). • Incentives could be given such as free tickets to a football game or discounts for a clothing store. Other strategies include advertising (such as the ‘Be a man’ campaign) and sending men a letter of reminder every 12 or 18 months to visit their doctor for a check-up. • Conditions can be detected and treated early, which can often mean the difference between life and death. Patients can talk to their doctors about healthy behaviours.

  8. Questions • TYK p.110 q.3 and 4 • Apply your knowledge q. 8, 9,10, 11, 13.

  9. Test your knowledge 3a) • Women suffer significantly more from osteoporosis. Osteoporosis rates increase significantly for both men and women after the age of 45–54. • Hormonal changes in women lead to a weaker bone density than men. Women are more likely to visit doctors, which may mean that the condition is diagnosed in women more often. 3b) • Death rates have decreased for males and females since the 1970s. 4a) • Men have higher rates of injury deaths when compared to women. • Men are more likely to take risks such as drink driving and speeding. 4b) • Safety features such as seatbelts and air bags may have contributed to the decline in injury deaths. Laws such as speeding laws and the introduction of random breath testing may have decreased injury deaths.

  10. Apply your knowledge 9) Females live longer, which means they are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, as these diseases are more common in older people. 11a) Historically, males smoked much more than females. Even though the rates of smoking are more similar now, there are many males who no longer smoke, but did in the past and therefore have a higher chance of developing cancers. 11b) Breast cancer tends to occur in younger ages in females than prostate cancer does in males. 13) Men may see going to the doctor as an interrogation. Many don’t understand that doctors are there to help them and improve their health.
