  2. What is Test Anxiety? It is worry or fear caused by having to take tests. Symptoms: • Mental distraction (noise, temperature, passersby) • Physical symptoms • Mental blocks • Building test-taking skills can help reduce test anxiety

  3. What causes test anxiety? • It is caused by pressure, past experience and fear of failure

  4. Common thoughts

Effective studying gives you confidence • Set the right atmosphere (light, distractions, don’t do it if you are overtired) • Make the most of your notes • Develop a schedule (mark deadlines, breaks, be realistic) • Create learning aids (charts, timelines, flashcards) • Prepare yourself (ask questions, take notes, ask for help) • Be kind to yourself (sleep and eat well)

  6. Learn good test taking skills • For short-answer exams: • Budget your time • Do easiest questions first • Look for clues in the questions • Answer each question • Use the full time allowed

  7. multiple choice • Solve in the order given • Think as you read • Read each choice carefully • Eliminate the wrong choices • Make an educated guess • Finish the exam

  8. For essay exams: • Read all questions first (underline key words) • Organize your ideas (outline) • Start with the easiest question • Proofread at the end

  9. You can learn to control your anxiety • Think positively • Use your imagination in a positive way (as a winner not as a loser) • Have a healthy diet and exercise regularly

  10. Learn to relax • Loosen your clothing • Tighten the muscles in your toes • Hold for a count of 10 • Relax • If your mind is blocked during tests: • Close your eyes • Take a deep breath • Concentrate on your breathing • Let it go • Go back to the exam

  11. Take steps to beat test anxiety • Study effectively (to learn the material) • Learn efficient test-taking strategies • Use relaxation techniques
