  2. The Changing Horizon • Accounting is not just adding and subtracting. • An accountant handles a broad range of responsibilities, makes business decisions, and prepares and interprets financial reports.

  3. Accounting Professions in For-Profit Businesses • For-profit businesses operate to earn money for their owners. • Today computers handle much of the basic accounting work. • This allows more time for planning for future operations.

  4. Accounting Professions in Not-For-Profit Organizations • Not-for-profit organizations do not work to earn a profit but get income from donations. • Goal is to balance income with expenses.

  5. Job Definitions • Accounting clerk – an entry level job usually performing one or two accounting tasks. • Certified Public Accountant – pass a national test and meet specified experience and education standards to become “certified” to practice accounting. • Public accounting firms provide services to the firms clients. • Arthur Anderson Worldwide, Pricewaterhouse-Coopers, Deloitte and Touche, Ernst & Young, KPMG Peat Marwick
