Low BirthWeight • Babies born to pregnant mothers who smoke weigh less. • Babies smaller because not fully developed. • Low birth weight is major factor for complications and health problems even though difference in weight may not seem significant. • 1996- 63.7 our of 1,000 born at low birth weight (Native Hawaiians) • 1996- 66.9 out of 1,000 low birth weight (statewide) Photo courtesy Of www.wellnessguide.or g/ staywell/drugs.htm

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome • SIDS is sudden and unexpected death of apparently healthy infant that remains unexplained even after a thorough investigation. • Leading cause of death for children one month to one year of age. • Although cause of SIDS is unknown, smoking during pregnancy and after birth is one of the major risks factors.   9. Conclusion • Smoking is stupid (although this is an opinion it is mostly true) • Smoking is like eating rat poison. • Shouldn’t smoke (also an opinion) • Help a friend stop smoking. • Not only can affect yourself but you can affect other people while smoking too (second hand smoke…etc).
