  2. What is a Direct Object? • A direct object is the personorthing in a sentence that receives the action of the verb directly and answers the question what?or whom?

  3. How to Spot the Direct Object • I invite the boys.  Whom do I invite?  The boys • He reads the book.  What does he read?  The book. • **The nouns boys and books are direct objects. They answer the question what? or whom?

  4. Where is the Direct Object ? • REMEMBER THESE SENTENCES* • Lui chiama il cameriere. – He calls the waiter. • Noi vediamo Lucia. – We do not see Lucia. • Io compro i regali. – I buy gifts. • Silvana lava le tazze. – Silvia cleans the cups.

  9. Where does the Direct Object Pronoun go? Direct Object Pronouns come before the conjugated verb. Innegative sentences, the word NONmust precede the DOP. Esempi: Mangio la frutta.  La mangio. Non scrivo il compito.  Non loscrivo.

  10. DOP & Infinitives If a sentence includes an infinitive, the DOP is usually attached to the infinitive ending after the final –e is dropped. Two ways the sentence can be created. Esempio: Devo finire i compiti. Devo finirli. (or) Lidevo finire.
