  1. Task 1 There were 3 ● 3 ● 3 ● 3 ● 3 fans in attendance at Mica’s first football game. What are some other ways to write the number of fans at Mica’s football game?

  2. Answer • 3⁵ OR . . . • 243 Or . . . • 9 x 9 x 3 or 27 x 9 or 81 x 3 . . .

  3. Powers and Exponents Factors • Whole numbers that are being multiplied • Example: a) 10 ● 3 = 30 10 & 3 are factors

  4. Power 2 x 2 x 2 = 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 = • A product of repeated factors • has 2 parts: a BASE and an exponent • Example: 5⁴ - this is the power; the 5 (factor) is being multiplied repeatedly 4 times ( 5 x 5 x 5 x 5)

  5. Base • The number being multiplied (the repeated factor) • The 1st number in the power • Examples: 10⁹ (10 is the base) 2⁷ (2 is the base)

  6. Exponent • Tells us the number of times the base (factor) is repeated • Example: 4⁶ ( 6 is the exponent); it tells us 4 is a factor 6 times- 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4

  7. Squared • The exponent is always 2 • example: 42 is read as four to the second power or four squared

  8. Cubed • The exponent is always 3 • Examples: = seven cubed

  9. Finding the value of a power • 3 to the fifth = = 3 x 3 x 3 x3 x 3 = 243 • = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 • On Monday, you invited 5 friends to your party. On Tuesday, each friend invited 5 other friends. On Friday, each of those friends invited 5 more friends. How many people were invited on Friday? = 5 x 5 x 5 = 125
