In School… • …you cannot use free e-mail (i.e. commercial, advertiser-sponsored service such as Hotmail)* • …you cannot use chat sites or instant messaging* • … you cannot use Internet/network resources to access/store/install games or other large files *(Use is allowed during after hour Access Center times with permission.)

  18. Bad Websites:Every site you visit is recorded • In New Brunswick Schools there is a very strict filter that records all site addresses in Fredericton. They know: • What school you are in • What site you visited • What time you visited that site • What computer you were on • Students have been tracked and disciplined for going to inappropriate (bad) sites.

  19. What do you do if you go to a bad site by accident? • If you are searching for a good site and a bad one pops up: • Click the back button to get off of it. • Report it to your teacher • Your teacher can notify the IS manager at the district to block it.

  20. Other Websites try to collect information • Be aware of answering any personal questions online. • If it feels uncomfortable …don’t do it.

  36. Predators troll for information • They ask for Names, likes, dislikes … “I hate it when my parents treat me like a kid” “Ya me too” “What’s your name” “My name is Cindy”

  37. Hi, My name is Cindy I am 12 years old BE CAREFUL! Do you know who you are talking to? You are susceptible to online predators.

Online Predator tricks • They gradually seduce their targets through attention, affection, kindness, and even gifts • They are aware of the latest music and hobbies likely to interest kids. • They listen to and sympathize with kids' problems. • They try to make young people open up by gradually introducing sexual content into their conversations or by showing them sexually explicit material. • Some predators work faster than others, engaging in sexually explicit conversations immediately.

  41. What is Cyberbullying? The use of: e-mailcell phones pager text messagesinstant messagingpersonal web sites, or polling Web sites to repeatedly and intentionally harm others.

  42. Nearly everyone is bullied at some time in their lives: by brothers and sisters, by neighbours, by adults or by other children. If you are being bullied, you may feel scared, vulnerable and quite alone but you owe it to yourself to try and sort out the situation so that the the bullying stops.

  44. Tell a friend what is happening Ask him or her to help you. It will be harder for the bully to pick on you if you have a friend with you for support.

  45. Try to ignore the bullying or say 'No' really firmly, then turn and walk away. Don't worry if people think you are running away. Remember, it is very hard for the bully to go on bullying someone who won't stand still to listen.

  46. Try not to show that you are upset or angry Bullies love to get a reaction - it's 'fun'. If you can keep calm and hide your emotions, they might get bored and leave you alone. As one teenager said to us, 'they can't bully you if you don't care'.

  47. Don't fight back if you can help it Most bullies are bigger or stronger than you. If you fight back you could make the situation worse, get hurt or be blamed for starting the trouble.

  48. It's not worth getting hurt to keep possessions or money If you feel threatened, give the bullies what they want. Property can be replaced, you can't.

  49. Try to think up funny or clever replies in advance Make a joke of it. Replies don't have to be wonderfully brilliant or clever but it helps to have an answer ready. Practice saying them in the mirror at home. Using prepared replies works best if the bully is not too threatening and just needs to be put off. The bully might just decide that you are too clever to pick on.

  50. Try to avoid being alone in the places where you know the bully is likely to pick on you…tell someone! This might mean changing your route to school, avoiding parts of playground, or only using common rooms or lavatories when other people are there. It's not fair that you have to do this, but it might put the bully off.
