  1. Welcome to our Mother Tongue Coffee Afternoon

Purpose of today • Explain why we value Mother Tongue and share some of the research about the benefits of maintaining a child’s mother tongue • Explore some of the language learning opportunities our students already have to use their mother tongue within the school context • Explain some of the ways in which you can help support the KJS Mother Tongue programme

  3. What is Mother Tongue? . Research literature defines mother tongue as the “language learned first, the language identified with as a native speaker, the language known best and the language used most”*. • Learning in a language other than mother tongue in IB programmes, April 2008, p. 1

  4. Why do we value Mother Tongue at Kowloon Junior School?* As an international school, Kowloon Junior has a rich multilingual student background of mother tongue speakers . * Research shows that mother-tongue language is crucial for maintaining cultural identity and celebrating the diversity amongst our students *Supports the philosophy of International mindedness among teachers, students and parents.. Hindi, Japanese, Urdu, Thai, Cantonese, Tagalog, Bangla, Korean

  5. * Helps young children to gain a deeper understanding of language and how to use it. *May help children to learn more quickly and effectively * May develop more flexibility in children’s thinking as literacy skills are transferred • We strongly value the importance of encouraging families to keep their mother tongue alive at home and to use it as a means for their child to share their knowledge with others.

  6. What learning opportunities do our students already have to use their mother tongue language within our school? Opportunities include, 

  7. Unpacking central ideas and new vocabulary in mother tongue groups with parents to increase social and academic vocabulary

  8. Vocabulary Tree

  9. Sharing class and library literature

  10. Class presentations

  11. Support for parent-led mother tongue maintenance groups

  12. * Cultural Celebration Days and the UN Mother Tongue Day * Conferences conducted in mother tongue settings * Lunch Oasis Clubs for children to socialise in and across language groups

  13. What are some of the ways that you can help support the KJS Mother Tongue programme? Hopes * Encourage you to keep your mother tongue alive at home * In school - through listening and speaking activities across all stages of the school. * Helping with the UOI’s in Year groups * Developing Talk Bags * Developing library resources * Running a lunch or afterschool club or a story club * Supporting at school events throughout the year * Book Week * Making resources and displays

  14. The importance of the Mother Tongue With onewheel (one language), you can go from place to place. With one big and one small wheel (one good and one not so good language) you can go further and faster. With two equal-sized wheels (two strong languages) you can comfortably go anywhere you want! 
