READ: Empowering Students through Literacy and Food Programs

READ is a partnership between International Literacy Association and National Association of State Title I Directors, providing literacy activities and meals for students in Title I schools. Volunteers lead reading and literacy programs to improve reading skills, combat food insecurity, and increase parental engagement. READ has been successfully implemented in Louisiana, Illinois, and Missouri, impacting thousands of students.

International Literacy Association The International Literacy Association (ILA) is a global advocacy and membership organization of more than 300,000 literacy educators, researchers, and experts across 75 countries. ILA has an active affiliate in 44 US states. With over 60 years of experience, ILA has set the standard for how literacy is defined, taught, and evaluated.

  3. National Association of State Title I Directors NASTID… • is a membership organization for Title I Directors charged with managing their state-level Title I programs. Members… • ensure compliance with federal regulations. • work to see that all children—especially those living in poverty— have access to a high-quality education.

Louisiana READ Update: “The students in our local summer school program that also included the [READ] students read over 27,000 e-books in July (2017)! If we hadn't attended the National Title I Conference last year in Houston, this would have never occurred. We met the Capstone group there and they connected us with our state myON rep. We helped set her up with the local school system staff who were in charge of the summer literacy program and the e-book program happened. Very exciting culmination to our summer!”

Missouri READ • Initial project started June 15, 2016. • Harris-Stowe provides bus transportation for university students and council members. • Facilitated a read-aloud activity with Kindergarten through 5th graders at the elementary school. There were 400 students. Each student received the same book used in the their read-aloud plus another of their own choosing.
