  2. Review • What is an ion? • An atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. • An ion is created when an atom loses an electron. • Removing one electron will result in the formation of a positive ion with a +1 charge.

What is Ionization Energy? • The energy required to overcome the attraction of the nuclear charge and remain an electron from a gaseous atom is ionization energy. • Ionization energy is used for predicting charges of ions. • The amount of energy required to remove the first outermost electron is the first ionization energy. • The amount of energy required to remove the outermost electron from the gaseous 1+ ion is the second ionization energy.

Factors in Ionization Energy • Attraction to the nucleus • An electron with a greater attraction to the nucleus increases the ionization energy. • Charge of the nucleus • If the nucleus contains more protons it will be positively charged, so electrons will have a greater attraction to it (vice versa). • Distance of the electron from the nucleus • The further away the electron is from the nucleus, the smaller the attraction will be.

Trends in Ionization Energy • The first ionization energy will gradually increase as you move from left to right across a period. • The first ionization energy will generally decrease as you move down a group on the periodic table. • The nuclear charge will increase, and the shielding effect is constant as you move across.
