  1. Evaluating Expressions

  2. Expressions An expression is NOT an equation because it DOES NOT have an equal sign. There are 2 types of expressions. • 5 + 84 Numerical • 3x + 10 Algebraic Notice there are no equal signs in these Expression (so they are not equations!)

  3. Evaluate Evaluate means to find the value of an algebraic expression by substituting numbers in for variables. (Plug & Chug) m = 2 8 + m ? 8 + 2 10

  4. Evaluate the expression if a = 3, b = 4, and c = 5 1) ab - c 3) (3)(4) - 5 2(3) + 4 2 6 + 4 2 12 - 5 6 + 2 = 8 7 2) 2a(b - c) 4) 2(3)(4 - 5) 2(4 + 5) 2(3)(-1) 3 18 2(9) -6 = = 6 3 3

  5. Substitution Substitution is when you substitute numbers in for variables. (It’s the same as evaluating). Example:x = 4 x + 12 + x = ? Substitute the 4 in for x4 + 12 + 4 = 20
