At the Post-16 E-Learning Practitioners' Conference 2004, Gavin Peake, Program Manager in Computer Science, discusses the innovative use of the game Neverwinter Nights to create an engaging learning environment. The project aims to make learning key skills fun and interactive, allowing for easy assessment through gameplay. Since its initiation in 2001, various modules have been designed to fit educational criteria, receiving positive feedback highlighting increased interest and enjoyment in learning. History of Project 2001 • Learner focus groups looking at fun delivery methods 2002 • Release of Neverwinter • Review of game engine to analyse its potential
History of Project 2003 • Data capture software written to transfer evidence to MS word • Beta test of Comms product 2004 • App number unit completed • Head key skills EV approved as assessment tool
History of Project 2004 • Appointed full time post to decrease development time and improve delivery • App number and Comms gone live • College wide roll out for wider key skills units • 1st group of key skills portfolios through external moderation
The Game • Specially designed modules have been created to meet the criteria of various Key Skills.
How it works • While playing the game students need to complete certain tasks and puzzles • Evidence is recorded within the game using pre created booklets

The Future • Already developed and delivered Application of Number module successfully. We have other Key Skills Level 1 qualifications at the Beta testing stage.
