  2. Concept Talk What inspires people to act courageously?

  3. Amazing Words • anticipate: to look forward to something • We hope our friends anticipate the party as much as we do. • Trepidation: an uncomfortable feeling that something bad might happen • They hiked the steep trail with trepidation.

  4. Vocabulary • Compressions- pressing • Frank is grateful the doctor used chest compressions to save his father. • Grumbled-complained • The students grumbled when the teacher told them they had a test.

  5. Vocabulary • Insistently-repeatedly • The dog insistently barked at the boy. • Minute- very small • We found minute traces of chocolate on the counter top.

  6. Vocabulary • Neutral-non-working position of the gears • If the car is in neutral, it won’t go anywhere. • Normally- commonly • The cats normally sit under the tree at night.

  7. Vocabulary • Intentionally- purposely • He intentionally missed the plane.

  8. Language • Declarative: make a statement end with a period • Interrogative: ask a question and end with a question mark • Imperative: make a command or request, and end with a period • Exclamatory: show strong feeling, and end with an exclamation mark. They are often interjections.

  9. Homographs Words that are spelled the same but mean different things. Sometimes with different pronunciations. • Bank • Bat • Bear • Clear • Bow • can

  10. Suffix -ly • Using ly makes an adjective an adverb ( a word that modifies a verb, or adjective) • I am sleepy. • Sleepy is an adjective, how you are. • I sleepily walked down the stairs. • Sleepily describes how you walked.

  11. Suffix -ly • Her dress was plain. • Plain describes the dress. • She dressed plainly. • Plainly describes how she dressed. • The boy looked sad. • Sad describes the boy (and how he feels) • She stood sadly over the grave. • Sadly describes how she stood.
