Brave Melissa • Let’s read the first paragraph of “Brave Melissa”. • The title of the story tells us that Melissa is brave. I wonder what she does that makes her brave? • As I read I learn she is responsible because she walks her dog every day. • Later I read that her dog falls through the ice, and Melissa bravely rescues him.
Monitor and Clarify • Finish reading the story. • At the end of paragraph 2, I ask myself, What happened? I don’t understand how Melissa’s dog ended up in the water, so I reread the paragraph. • Then I understand that after Melissa fell, the dog kept going without her.
