  3. Planning, Preparations • SVP takes a full year to plan! • Use last year’s feedback from EVERYONE • Time frame (1 week, 2 weeks, etc.) • RIT Orientation program • NSSO program • Outreach, NSP programs

  4. People who WORK the Program • CSI’s, CSI Coordinator • Barb Gasbarre, Intern (NEW!) • NTID Admissions • TIS (SVP app) • SLT/OA’s • Faculty (Math, English testing, Career Sampling) • Chairs • Communication Studies and Services • And More…

Challenges and Kudos to SVP ‘16! • Followed their schedules, checked mailfolders • Homesickness, tired • Confusion, adaptation • Some didn’t bring alarm clocks! • Boundaries (Title IX awareness) • Communication environment • OA’s did a GREAT job making sure ALL took their placement tests! • We are all INVESTED in the transition/success of our students

Fun Numbers! • 203 SVP students • 200 started Fall semester • Oldest student: age 37 • Youngest student: age 17 • International Students hail from: • China • Indonesia • India • Nigeria • Ghana • 1-2 students are from: • Alaska • Maine • Missouri • North Carolina • New Mexico • Oregon • South Dakota • West Virginia • Wyoming

  7. Some more information… • Directly accepted into majors at start of SVP: 129 • How many changed their majors: 11 • Placement tests REVEAL true levels of English/Math • Taking BS-Level English • Transfer credits process • 2 athletes (some competing demands)

  8. NSSO… • 72 NSSO students • Accepted into… • Game Design, Film/Animation, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, etc… • Changed into a DAY-LONG orientation program • MCAS Summer Bridge program, IMPRESS, Women in Computing • *about 50+ internal transfers from NTID to BS programs!

Beloit College Mindset List • There has always been a digital swap meet called eBay. • Vladimir Putin has always been calling the shots at the Kremlin. • The Sandy Hook tragedy is their Columbine. • Elian Gonzalez, who would like to visit the U.S. again someday, has always been back in Cuba. • The United States has always been at war. • SpongeBob SquarePants has always lived at Bikini Bottom.

The Ali/Frazier boxing match for their generation was between the daughters of Muhammad and Joe. • They have never had to watch or listen to programs at a scheduled time.  • Each year they've been alive the U.S. population has grown by more than one million Latinos.  • Vaccines have always been erroneously linked to autism. • If you want to reach them, you’d better send a text—emails are oft ignored. • “Nanny cams” have always been available to check up on the babysitter.
