Patterns • Expository, or informational, text uses a wide variety of patterns. When you recognize the pattern, it’s easier to understand the text.
Sequence Pattern • One very common pattern is sequence. • Dictionaries and manuals are sequenced: bat follows apple.
Sequence Text Pattern • May have information listed in order of importance or in the order that something happens. • When the information is listed in order of importance, it is often numbered. • When the information is given in the order that something happened, it often includes dates.
Order of Importance • Reasons to Stop Global Warming • 1. Protect the environment • 2. Prevent drastic climate change • 3. Stop glaciers from melting • 4. Slow the over-consumption of limited resources • This sequence shows order of importance, from most important to least important.
