  2. Exercise • Find the constituent lexemes in the following complex lexemes: • movement, lowly, nationhood.

Morphemes • are the minimal building blocks of lexemes. • Morphemes have: • phonological form • syntactic (or morpho-syntactic) function • meaning • Compositionality • When words have the meaning you would predict them to have on the basis of their constituents they are compositional in their semantics.

  4. Word formation rules • operate on a BASE and create a new lexeme or set of lexemes. • The form of the base is the STEM of the new lexeme. • AFFIXES are attached to stems by word formation rules. • WFRs are sensitive to many different properties of bases. • e.g. -ity is sensitive to whether its base is a native word or not, • *alonity vs domesticity

  5. Word formation rules (contd) • WFRs specify the form, grammatical category and meaning of derived lexemes. • WFRs can be associated with morpho-phonemic changes. • domestic domesticity

Exercise • Look at the following bases and derived words: • commit commission • submit submission • admit admission • revert reversion • dominate domination • What change has taken place in the phonemic form of the base when it becomes a constituent of derived lexemes ending with the suffix -ion?

  7. Exercise • Separate the affixes from the following words and divide them into inflectional and derivational subclasses: • singularities, neglectful, soils, deliberation, sacrifices, artificially.
