  2. Objectives • State the problems that the Roman Republic faced • Discuss how Julius Caesar influenced the Roman Republic

  3. Vocabulary • Triumvirate – a group of three leaders • Assassinate – murder someone for political reasons

  4. Trouble in Rome • Patricians became wealthier and more powerful • Plebeians became poorer, fell deeper into debt; had little say in their government

  5. Attempts at Reform • The Senate resorted to violence to block the Gracchus brothers’ attempt at reform • Force rather than law began to rule Rome, and, following a brutal civil war, General Sulla declared himself dictator and ruled Rome for three years

  6. The Rise of Caesar • Rome became a dictatorship beginning with Sulla’s rule, but it was still called a republic • Julius Caesar declared himself dictator for life, which effectively brought an end to the Roman Republic

  7. Summary • After successful conquests, the Roman Republic began to have problems • Some problems were caused by slavery, the greed of the wealthy, and high taxes • Attempts at reform failed, leading to civil war • Eventually, three powerful generals shared power • One general, Julius Caesar, defeated the other two generals, only to be assassinated shortly after
