Mineral Basics • Minerals are naturally occurring, inorganic solids with a unique chemical composition and atomic structure. • Minerals can be an individual element (Au) or a compound (halite). • Minerals can be identified by their physical and chemical properties. • Minerals can be classified into groups based on their chemical properties. • Over 4000 minerals are known.

  3. Color • Not always a useful property because some minerals occur in many different colors.

  4. Luster • Appearance in reflected light. Metallic (also known as splendent) Submetallic Vitreous (also known as glassy) Adamantine (also known as brilliant ordiamondlike) Resinous (also known as resinlike) Silky Pearly (also known as mother-of-pearl) Greasy (also known as oily) Pitchy (also known as pitchlike) Waxy (also known as waxlike) Dull (also known as earthy)
