  2. Let’s Review: What’s the difference between screening and assessment?

  3. Guidelines for On-going Assessment of Infants and Toddlers • Assessment means working together to learn about the child • An assessment should take into account all aspects of development • An assessment should give a picture of child in various settings and from many people

  4. Know and understand the sequences and timetables of development • Identify the child’s strengths and abilities as well • Assessments should feel like HELP • Reassessment should occur in familiar settings

  5. Steps to follow during assessment • Begin with conversation • Listen to what the parent tells you • Observe in familiar settings • Parents should also observe • Specific areas are assessed as necessary • Multiple sources of info should be used

  6. Remember DON’T do these things! • Don’t separate the child from caregiver • Don’t have someone the child is unfamiliar with conduct assessment • Don’t limit the assessment to certain areas • Remember formal tests/tools should not be the cornerstone of evaluation.
