  1. The Six Essential Elements Of Geography

  2. The World In Spatial Terms (Theme: Location) • This element shows the world and places using maps and space. • This element teaches us how to acquire, read and process information from maps.

  3. The World In Spatial Terms (Theme: Location) • This element teaches us how to use mental maps to organize information about people, places and environments. (What are mental maps?)

  4. The World In Spatial Terms (Theme: Location) • This element teaches us how to analyze the spatial organization of people, places and environments all around the globe.

  5. Places and Regions (THEMES: Place & Regions) • A place is a space on Earth that has meaning to humans. • Regions are areas that share one or more features that make it different from the surrounding areas. (Ex: cities, states, countries, continents…) 1: Manhattan2: Brooklyn3: Queens4: The Bronx5: Staten Island

  6. Places and Regions (THEMES: Place & Regions) • Places and regions are defined by their physical and human characteristics. • Physical Characteristics – animal and plant life, sources of water, climate and weather, landforms and soil. • Human Characteristics – ethnicity, language, political systems, economic systems, population distribution, religion, standard of living.

  7. Places and Regions (THEMES: Place & Regions) • This element teaches us how people create places/regions. (Why was the U.S. created) • This element teaches us how culture and experience influence people’s perception of places/regions.

  8. Physical Systems (Theme: Movement & H-E Interaction) • The shape of the Earth's surface along with its different ecosystems affects cultures and the way people live. Where you live makes how you live different. (Desert vs. Mountain living)

  9. Physical Systems (Theme: Movement & H-E Interaction) • Physical systems includes the climate. The climate affects everything from the animals that live there, the things people do, the clothing people wear, and even the houses they live in. • Physical systems also include natural events (floods, hurricanes, tornados, volcanoes…) that change the earth’s surface.

  10. Human Systems (Themes: Movement & H-E Interaction) • Population distribution, density, growth and movement helps us understand humans and geography. (Why do people live where they do? Why do people migrate to other countries?) • The earth and/or the environment affects human migration. (Ex: mountains and deserts are barriers to migration.)

  11. Human Systems (Themes: Movement & H-E Interaction) • Human systems are different based on cultures, languages, ethnicities. • Humans also move goods and ideas to new places through communication, trade and transportation. • The earth forces humans to cooperate. When conflict arises the division and control of the earth changes.

  12. Environment and Society (THEME: H-E Interaction) • Human activity (mining, deforestation, damming, building…) can change the earth’s surface. • Humans mine to collect natural resources (oil, coal, metals) necessary to live. • Humans cut down forests to build houses, make paper, plant crops… • Humans dam large rivers to create an energy source or land for crops.

  13. Environment and Society (THEME: H-E Interaction) • Humans can change their environment in many ways. We can build things in nature that would cause animals to move. We can burn oil or gas to pollute our air. We can also use to many of our resources such as over fishing in our lakes and oceans causing certain species to die out, or cutting down too many trees which will take away a whole habitat's home. • Humans use the earth’s natural resources. (oil, diamonds, coal, water, air) to live.

  14. The Uses of Geography (none of the Themes) • Geography can help us look at the past and the future. • Geography helps us understand our past by helping us interpret our past. • Geography can affect the future too. For example, if you need more energy in the future and you have a big flowing river near by, you can start the process of building a dam to help create the energy you expect to need. • Geographers use geography to help us plan for our future needs and for the future of our children.
