  4. EssayWrite about the poem and its effect on you. You may wish to include some or all of these points: • the poem's content - what it is about • the ideas the poet may have wanted us to think about • the mood or atmosphere of the poem • how it is written - words or phrases you find interesting, the way the poem is structured or organized, and so on • your response to the poem

  5. Essay Plan Essay title: Essay topic: Introduction: Who is the poet? What is the poem about? Section: (use the bullet points which accompany your essay title as a guide) Paragraph 1 – What are some ideas conveyed in the poem? P: E: E: Paragraph 2 - What is the mood/atmosphere of the poem? P: E: E: Etc... Section: Paragraph3- Discuss the language used by the poet. Aim to discuss the use of poetic devices such as metaphors and similes. P: E: E: Etc... Conclusion: Did you like the poem? Why or why not? Summarise your 3 main points.

Paragraphs Every paragraph you write must follow this structure: • P point – this is your topic sentence which tells the reader what your paragraph is about. • E evidence – this is a quotation or example which proves your point. • E explain – this is where you explain why you have made your point, and how your evidence shows that you are right. • L – Provide a link back to the essay question

Paragraphs • Example paragraph 1: • P - ‘Charlotte O’Neil’s song’ encourages the reader to think about ideas such as the injustices of the class system. • E Charlotte O’Neil gets treated really badly as a result of being poor and having to work as a maid. This is evident when it says, “You lay on a silken pillow. I lay on a cot.” It is then stated that, “the poor deserve the gate.” • E This shows us that Charlotte O’Neil did not have as nice things as her master. Her master believes she deserves this just because she is poor. • L – The reader responds by feeling sympathy for Charlotte O’Neil at first and then very proud of her when she stands up to her boss.
