8. The “Lab of the South” - The concept connects ORNL to the economic development priorities of SGPB states • Starts with fully understanding technology-based economic development priorities, programs and strategies of each state. • Identifies ways that ORNL’s world leadership capabilities can support these individual state priorities. • Finds ways to link state technology resources to ORNL expertise. • Seeks opportunities to leverage individual state capabilities into regional alliances involving several states.

9. The “Lab of the South” early initiatives • Southern Homeland Security Initiative (using the South as a test bed for new homeland security technologies and a region where cutting edge technologies are commercialized.) • Southern Automotive R&D Initiative (leveraging two decades of automotive manufacturing growth and the university-based R&D centers that have emerged near these OEMs into a regional consortium to compete with Michigan.) • Southern Information Technology Initiative (linking universities in the region to ORNL’s National Leadership Computing Facility.) • Southern Nanotechnology Initiative (building a Southern “nanotechnology hot spot” by leveraging the world’s greatest capabilities in neutron scattering and nano science at ORNL with the unique capabilities that exist at research institutions throughout the region.)

10. The “Lab of the South” concept applied to the fledgling Southern Nano Initiative • Funding SGPB to conduct a knowledge mapping and benchmarking study. • Understanding state specific initiatives (i.e., attending the recent Oklahoma Nanotechnology Conference). • Identifying key players and potential partners for the future, taking a long-term view. • Working on your agenda, hopefully finding ways over time to link our capabilities to your priorities. • Promoting proposals to use the CNMS. • Exploring the possibility of two multi-state regional conferences: • One focused on availability of capital for nano start-up companies • Another focused on nanotechnology researchers • Refining a “hub and spoke” concept first advanced at the Southern Technology Council meeting in Oak Ridge in April that leverages the region’s assets. • Doing everything possible to ensure that the “nano” revolution does no bypass the South as much as the “info” and “bio” did.
