  1. Sandscaping in the UK: • Introduction to the SuCCESS model The Crown Estate Presentation: Southern Coastal Group March 2014

  2. This presentation: • The Crown Estate role and responsibilities • The Marine Estate – Energy, Infrastructure and Coastal • Coastal Innovation and Sandscaping • The SuCCESS model • Progress to date • What are we doing to assist decision makers? • Your thoughts and feedback

  3. Energy and Infrastructure & Coastal (the marine estate) On the marine estate, energy and infrastructure projects are growing. • Portfolio includes almost entire seabed out to 12 nm and over half of foreshore, tidal beds and estuaries; plus right to lease in UK Renewable Energy Zone • Offshore renewables, CCS, gas storage, marine minerals, cables and pipelines, marinas, moorings, aquaculture, ports & harbours • We play a key role in offshore renewable energy (wind and W&T), providing site development rights and leases

  4. Coastal Innovation Changing Perceptions: Creating a different landscape for management at a different scale Creating Opportunity: An integrated approach to economic regeneration Securing the Future: Building flood risk management within a broader approach Working with Nature: Designing delivery within an eco-dynamic system Use of sand for place making…..

  5. Building with Nature Future-proofing Shoreline-changing Efficiency The Sand Motor Concept Protection Enhancement Case study: Delfland Sand Engine, The Netherlands Flagship “Building With Nature” project (2011) Eco-dynamic design - Natural processes transport the sediment downdrift

  6. Zandmotor in the Netherlands Facts and figures • 21.5million m3 (70m cubic feet) of sand–40 times annual Lincshore • 2 miles by ½ mile (above water) • 1 year construction, designed for 20 year life • £60 million (£50M Government+£10M Province) Photos Joop van Houdt, Rijkswaterstaat

  7. Zandmotor in the Netherlands What is it and what does it do? • Supports dune flood defences • Gradually supplies sediment to both sides • Large scale experiment for innovative coastal management • New habitat – above and under water • Transformed place: • Destination for walkers • ‘Kite surfing capital of the Netherlands’

  8. Zandmotor in the Netherlands How is it performing? • Extensive monitoring, 19 PhDs • First evaluations being carried out • Shape and size broadly developing as expected • Recreation and Habitats are starting to happen • Swimming safety concerns mitigated • 2016 evaluation will say more about actual benefits and impacts

  9. What is the SuCCESS model and how can it help? Employment Increase in visitor numbers Reduced crime Reduced erosion threat – not piecemeal protection Inftrastructure Improvement Increased local spending & tax generation Re-generation Niche tourism opportunities Improved housing Confidence Vulnerability to climate change reduced – future proofing Land value increase Reduced seasonal dependency Employment Working with nature Habitat creation Employment Habitat Protection

  10. What is the SuCCESS model and how can it help? SuCCESS(Sustainable Coastal Communities through coastal Engineering and Sandscaping) model:

  11. SuCCESS model: who is involved so far?

  12. What progress has been made to date?

  13. What are we doing to assist decision makers? • Creation of Coastal Development Steering Group; • Developing typological criteria – (technical and economic) to enable Local Authorities to decide whether a scheme is viable in their area • Identification and analysis of the different funding mechanisms; • Enabling funds to assist partners in developing funding proposals; • Funding of enabling actions to enable the delivery of the SuCCESS model and supporting the development of individual pilot projects; • Cost effective sourcing of marine minerals; • Creation of partnerships between authorities and industry who may benefit from SuCCESS.

  14. What are we doing to assist decision makers? • Specific locations where we are working with local partners: • To assess feasibility • To initiate partnerships • Starting to develop an academic community: • Resolving gaps identified in initial feasibility studies • Help to increase credibility • Connect with large body of NL research

  15. What are we doing to assist decision makers? • Suffolk: • Enthusiasm from ‘coastal partnership’ and local authority • Strong focus on adding value and opportunity • Two locations being explored – ‘shingle engine’

  16. Could Sandscaping work elsewhere in the UK? Options being explored • Need for flood protection - challenge of funding it • Need for a beach – vision to attract more spend per visitor • Socio-economic and viability will need to be determined • Your feedback please

  17. Sandscaping in the UK • CONTACT • Olivia Burgess, Marine Policy Manager, The Crown Estate • Olivia.burgess@thecrownestate.co.uk • Tel: 020 7851 5084 • SUMMARY • coastal transformation can be achieved through shoreline re-alignment • low risk, proven technology can deliver long-term confidence and economic, social and environmental benefits • integrated, large scale project maximises investment value and returns
