  1. Building a Knowledge-Centric System in the Cloud for TBI Brand Niemann Senior Enterprise Architect and Data Scientist Binary Group August 12, 2011. Update August 14, 2011.

  2. Started Here

  3. Slide Outline • Title Slide • USAMRMC Active Investment in TBI, PTSD, Suicide (FY06-10) • Research Driver (see next slide) • USAMRMC Research Programs in TBI • Continuum of TBI Care Determines Research Approach (see slide 5) • Specific Examples • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder • Continuum of Patient Care Determines Research Approach (see slide 6) • Specific Examples • Suicide • Army and Marine Rates Have Recently Surpassed the Civilian Rates • Lest We Forget Why We Are Here: Freedom

  4. Secretary of Defense Gates Memorandum 26 June 2008 • Caring for Our Wounded Personnel and Their Families: • “I request the development of a tailored plan to provide R&D investments that advance state of the art solutions for world class medical care with an emphasis on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury, Prosthetics, Restoration Sight Eye Care, and other conditions directly relevant to the injuries our soldiers are currently receiving on the battlefield.”

  5. Continuum of TBI Care Determines Research Approach

  6. Continuum of Patient Care Determines Research Approach

  7. The Story • MG James K. Gilman and/or Leslie Raulin (or their staff) knew how to do essentially a knowledge model (ontology) to describe the multiple dimensions of their work. • They captured that in slides 5 and 17 and then provided specific examples (instances) in slides 6-15 and slides 18-24, respectively. • This forms the basis for a knowledge-centric information system where the knowledge model (ontology) is the interface and the examples (instances) are the knowledgebase the interface links to.

  8. The Workflow Process • Capture the content of those two slides into a spreadsheet for use in a knowledgebase dashboard and knowledge-centric information system (done). • Obtain the 331 studies referred to for the knowledge-centric information system pilot (requested). • Use readily-available examples of TBI content to build a dashboard knowledgebase pilot (done-see next two slides). • Design the dashboard and system so it will work on Mobile Devices (see last slides). • All the content (knowledge model and knowledgebase) is then available for processing in the Binary Group’s semantic analytics tools (in process).

  9. Build a TBI Knowledgebase Dashboard in the Cloud SpotfireWeb Player

  10. Build a TBI Knowledge-Centric Systemin the Cloud http://cloud.binarygroup.com/Defense_and_Veterans_Brain_Injury_Center_Site_Map/DVBIC_Brainwaves_Newsletters

  11. Build Linked Open Data in the Knowledgebase PC Spotfire on Desktop

  12. The Workflow Process • Linked Open Data is Used to Implement the Knowledge-Centric System Model*: • Topics/Hierarchy: • Example - Brainline.org Topics (see previous slide 11) • Definitions/Concepts: • Example - Brain Injury Glossary (see previous slide 9) • Data Table and Elements/Metadata: • Example - Common Data Elements for TBI (see fourth tab in dashboard) *The items above have well-defined Web addresses and are meaningfully linked to one another using the knowledge model (see third tab in dashboard).

  13. Mobile Apps at USA.gov • mTBI Pocket Guide: • Reference for providers treating service members and Veterans with a mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). • National Resource Directory: • Connects wounded warriors, Service Members, Veterans, and their families with resources. • PTSD Coach: • Learn more about PTSD and find professional care, support and tools to help manage the stresses of daily life with PTSD. • U.S. Army News & Information: • Official news and information from the US Army now available on your iPhone. • Veterans Affairs Mobile: • Services for veterans from the Department of Veterans Affairs. http://apps.usa.gov/?v=all
