CORE is • the only institute specifically dedicated to research on the OSCE • a relatively young think tank, founded in January 2000 • not a classical academic institution, but one that engages in a combination of research, capacity-building services, publications, and teaching • independent of the OSCE, with which it enjoys good working relations • one of two main sections within the IFSH, one of Germany’s two largest peace research institutes www.core-hamburg.de Beim Schlump 83, 20144 Hamburg

  7. CORE Capacity Building CORE combines basic research on the OSCE and other multilateral organizations with consultancy, capacity building, and other services provided on a contract basis. Example of Institution Building: OSCE Academy Bishkek • CORE created a detailed plan of the Academy and also assisted with: • fundraising, • developing a curriculum, and • selecting teaching staff and students. • CORE members have also performed in a teaching and supervisory role. www.core-hamburg.de Beim Schlump 83, 20144 Hamburg

Example of Training: OSCE-Related Chairmanship Training Courses for Kazakh diplomats (2007 and 2008) Courses for Kazakh and Lithuanian diplomats (2009) • Contributed to enlarging the pool of MFA staff able to effectively co-operate with the OSCE • Helped prepare to assume the OSCE Chairmanship • Teaching provided by CORE staff, external experts from the OSCE, and national delegations • Oriented towards communicating practice- and policy-relevant expertise on the OSCE • Characterized by a specific participatory methodology • Academic Co-operation with Universities • OSCE-related seminars and lectures for students at the Universities of Hamburg, Venice and five Kazakh universities • Editorial co-operation in book publication with Kazakh researchers www.core-hamburg.de Beim Schlump 83, 20144 Hamburg

  10. CORE activities in Central Asia Since 2002, CORE has undertaken projects in all the Central Asian states except Turkmenistan and has engaged in co-operation with Central Asia experts. CORE’s most prominent projectin Central Asia involves mediating in a peacebuilding dialogue between moderate Islamists and secular forces.
