Community Learning Centers “By 2015: Tecnológico de Monterrey steps forward in its commitment with Mexico: to take a more dynamic and participative role in the task of generating well-being to the communities” Dr. Rafael Rangel S. Introduction • The Community Learning Centers program was born in the year 2001 as an answer from Tecnológico de Monterrey to the educational improvement needed in highly marginalized zones where educational access is very limited. These areas are usually where we find extreme poverty. • Within these last 5 years, Tecnologico de Monterrey has been working on an educational alternative to help thousands of people looking for a better way of life.

  3. Community Learning Centers A CLC is a learning center where participants can have access to educational programs through informatics technology; and where they can interact with e-tutors. These participants have access to specialized database that will allow them to trespass boundaries and integrate into the knowledge society.

  4. Objectives Objectives: • To support communities reducing poverty and marginalization rates with alternatives for social inclusion. • To offer education, information and communication access alternatives. • To promote the development of productive projects towards sustainable development for communities.

  5. Development Strategy • Our main strategy for development is that the students acquire meaningful educational opportunities to improve their professional and personal life. • The new skills that students will earn, will allow them to create their own productive projects, being helped by experts during the process. • Our main goal is that students can have access to better life standards and labor opportunities. By doing this, it will be possible to get sustainability for the communities, families and the students. Education Productivity

CLC Operational Model Facilitator Facilitator Computer Lab Student Educational Programs Tutors Representatives of social, private and public sectors Educational Model In order to have a good operational process, the CLC operational model has four fundamental elements: • a physical space with computers with Internet connection. • the facilitator, who is the CLC’s leader and guide. • the educational website and its courses. • and last, but not least, the tutors from Tecnológico de Monterrey, who support the students during their learning process.

  8. Physical space Any CLC must have at least 5 computers with Internet connection, so students can have access to: • courses available in the CLC educational website • information services, databases, e-libraries, links, others. • communication services: chat and email.

  9. Facilitator • The facilitator is the leader in the CLC. He or she has to lead the students during the course selection process, according to the interests and needs. The facilitator motivates the student to assist to the CLC, to learn, and improve themselves; the facilitator supports the learning method using computers and all the educational material that can be found in the CLC website. • Tecnologico de Monterrey trains all the facilitators from our partner institutions.

  10. Learning Environment In the CLC, the students are the center of their own learning process. Every time they access our courses from the CLC website, they are actually interacting with resources and didactic materials.

Educational Programs • The CLC educational website has several courses and study programs according to the student’s interest. • There are courses about: • using computers, Microsoft Office, among other programs. • developing teaching skills. • starting a business and planning a financial scheme. • understanding the importance of our own health prevention, as well as our relatives´. • There are also some complementary courses focused on kids, such as an e-lab and a library.

  18. Productive Projects • This is the new portal for traditional entrepreneurs. Through this portal new traditional entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to take business courses and find alternatives for financing their initiatives as well

  20. How to open a CLC If you’re interested to open a CLC in your community, you must cover the following requirements:

CLC Establishment Follow these steps for establishing and starting up a CLC • Make sure you have the location, the equipment, the Internet connection and the facilitator • Sign the Memorandum of Understanding with Tecnologico de Monterey and pay the annual fee • Take the training course for academic and operational purposes
