  1. Leadership Tips November 2013 1

  2. Extract from Lewis Senior’s email …One of the requests was that the Drilling Manager who hosts the session and other leaders who support the program spend some time sharing how they lead and what some of their leadership behaviors are. Hope you will take the opportunity to share some of your leadership tips next week.

  3. Who is a Leader? IkennaChukwumaeze (D&C MGR) Leadership has nothing to do with seniority or one’s position in the hierarchy of a company; has nothing to do with titles; has nothing to do with personal attributes; isn’t management. It is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards achievement of a goal. • Extract from Kevin Carey’s Leadership moment at the 2013 D&C Conference

  4. My Leadership Tips - IkennaChukwumaeze (D&C MGR) • Developed from years of working for/with/around different kinds of people – the good, the bad and the ugly • Conscious of my simplified learning's categories – Buckets of “How to” and “How not to” do things • Effective Management of Withdrawal Syndrome • Transition from Individual Contributor to Supervisor of people • What got you there won’t keep you there • Trust in the partnership • Recognize and stick to your space (Complement vs. Compete) • Know your team – Maintain needed balance between “Interfering” and “Ignoring”. Size of “railway track” could vary!

  5. My Leadership Tips - IkennaChukwumaeze (D&C MGR) • Seek to earn the trust and respect of the people you are leading • Positions can be decreed into existence but trust and respect are earned • Be part of the solution rather than part of the problem • Have a large heart, “sell” your people appropriately – there are plenty of rooms “up there” • Be prepared to take the bullet for the team • We are all humans after all, and could do with a bit of emotional uplifting • Effective management of the highs and lows • Have an Exit Strategy for your job…could start on day 1! • Learn from the past, produce in the present and be prepared for the future

  6. My Leadership Tips - IkennaChukwumaeze (D&C MGR) We are all leaders …… and we are all followers ……

  7. My Leadership Tips – Kelsey Helburg (ENG MGR SJV) • Set clear expectations • You work for the people that work for you • Know your team, know yourself • Be prepared for conversations • Provide opportunity • Know when to use your play and pause buttons • Consciously leave a legacy • E-mail is a poor form of communication • Field visits are about the people • Establish an environment with your team that allows them to push back • Sometimes people just need to be heard • Get past having an ego and give credit to others • Embrace the power of stakeholder engagement, networking

  8. My Leadership Tips – Dave Haddock (GM D&C) • You learn how to leverage your credibility • My success depends 100% on other people • The key to motivation is aligning: • Opportunity • Job satisfaction • Compensation • Any two will typically keep someone engaged, when you are down to just one you are heading for trouble • The coach’s son has to be the one to run extra laps • Know how many kids your employees have • DCOM (Direction, Competency, Opportunity, Motivation)

  9. My Leadership Tips from Jim Barron and others • ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ is not a leadership trait • Some people need to hear things 25 – 30 times before they will act • One inconsistent action will do more damage than 100 positive actions • Build relationships, sharing your intent and drivers is key • Get to know your people, understand their career objectives, understand who they are as opposed to what they do • Meet and greet people within 72 hours of them joining the company • Purposeful networking connections • I don’t need to kill someone before we do the right thing • Use the tenets or NOT NOW to back your call

  10. My Leadership Tips – Burt Harrison (OPS MGR SJV) • When you look at the options, consider the options that will allow for a next step in case it fails. Never pick up the options that have no recovery factor • When you talk about problems, discuss them don’t mandate the solution • If we talked about it – we did it, if we didn’t talk about it – you did it • Start over communicating with your people then calibrate • If I have to motivate you, then we probably hired the wrong person • If you don’t empower people they will never come up with solutions • Demonstrate that you have people’s backs, eliminate the roadblocks and fix the problems • Always share the WHY when you are mandating

  11. My Leadership Tips – David Miller (Owner DMW) • Business partners work best when you provide a long term view • Use the WHY tree for investigation and then decide on the WHO • You can’t teach skill but you can’t teach heart and character • If you love what you do, you’ll probably be good at it • Recognize high achievers and call out the non achievers • Doing good doesn’t excuse us from doing better • Lead with confidence in your ideas

  12. My Leadership Tips – Greta Lydeker (V.P. SJV) • Failure is momentary, if we do not learn and move on our performance will go into a downward spiral • Straight talk – regardless of E-Colors • Key to enjoying your work is it aligns with your personal values • How you receive bad news is very important, your initial reaction makes all the difference • Learn to condition yourself to respond, not react. Not everything goes as it should • The more self aware you are, the more self regulated you can become • You are the only one who knows if you are at the top of your game and you’re the only one who knows how to step up your game • Develop your personal leadership point of view, be grounded on your key principles so when there are challenges your consistent point of view comes out and you know what you will say, automatically

  13. My Leadership Tips – Greta Lydeker (V.P. SJV) • Your brand image is based on how you react, on how you deal with news and your consistency • We do not celebrate high performance enough • When you are achieving high performance understand what it feels and looks like so you can get back there when there is a dip • If you understand the critical and challenges of your business and people its easier to hold your line • Set challenging goals, not unrealistic goals

  14. My Leadership Tips – ArtitKrichphiphat(G.M. SJV) • Be yourself, learn to adapt but always be yourself • Treat people as family • Find the key things to focus on and work on them • Work your bad habits out of your system • A few things that really matter will move the mountain
