  2. His life • John Ugelstad is born 31st march 1921, and he was a Norwegian MSc in chemistry is regarded as the foremost pioneer in the polymer and kolloidkjemi. This technology has been of great importance for industrial and medical development in Norway and other countries. Ugelstad has received several international awards, including commander of St. OlavsOrden, and that he took a number of patents. "Ugelstad-spheres", which are monodisperse plastic spheres, described as a "genistrek" who constantly find new applications in several disciplines.

  3. His career: • Ugelstad studied the chemist at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH), where he graduated in 1948 and earned a doctorate at the University of Leyden, the Netherlands in 1955. In 1956 he became senior lecturer in industrial chemistry, NTH, and professor in 1967, and here he was the rest of his professional life. He worked in the Norwegian and foreign industry and laid the foundation for the company Dynal, which has grown into a large international company.

  4. His awards: • 1982 VisionIncentive Fund, • 1984 Guldkuggen (Sweden) • 1985: Nihon University SchoolofMedicineprice (Japan), • 1986: NTNFsspecialaward, • 1986 Le Livre Mondial des Oscar prix (France), • 1986: Norwegianinventor Association award - InventionPrize, • 1986 Grunnerusmedaljen-RoyalNorwegianaffirmationcompany, • 1990: Commanderofthe Order of St. Olav. • 1991: HonoraryMemberoftheNorwegian Technical Vitenskapskademi, • 1993 The Holger Crafoord award.

  5. Monodisperse particles • John Ugelstads most famous invention must be ”Ugelstad-spheres”. They are microscopic balls, that can be used to heal cancer. • On the middle of the 70th century, American researchers managed to create balls that was a thousandth of a millimeter in size. Balls like this cud have been useful, not least in medicine. But they was to small for them to be used to something useful, and U.S. scientists worked a lot to find a way to make the balls bigger, they even tried to make the balls bigger in the space. • Then it came a message that the bullets that they have struggled to make, was made by Jogn Uglestad in his laboratory at NTH in Norway. • The first thing that the American scientists did was to go to Norwegian Hydro, and find out if they could use the bullets to something useful. • They find out that the bullets could be used to heal cancer. They are also used to find a cure for HIV and AIDS.
