Chapter Renewal Initiative: Facing Realities and Embracing Change

This initiative follows a crucial meeting with Dean Thompson addressing challenges and the urgent need for improvement in attitude, behavior, and leadership within the chapter. Facing potential consequences, a strategic plan is outlined to achieve significant improvement before potential trusteeship. Leverage is lost, prompting immediate action through membership review and a renewed focus on the fraternity's values and unity. With alumni support and determination, the chapter aims to rebuild its foundations and reclaim its legacy.

  1. Why We are Here • Result of meeting with Dean Thompson last week • Some of this will be hard to say, and even harder to hear • Don’t tune out • We wouldn’t be here if this wasn’t important … lecturing is not one of my most favorite things

  2. Dean’s Comments • Tired of smoke and mirrors, unprepared • Where are the leaders? • Questions attitude, character & behavior • The severity of negative things, far out-weigh the several positive actions • “I need to get away from Sigma Pi”

  3. Dean’s Comments • “The TKE’s are kicking your ass.” • “One more major incident and I will be forced to call nationals and ask to remove the charter, I don’t know why I haven’t already.” • Needs to see some major improvement. Perhaps a little house cleaning is needed.

  4. Those are the Facts,This is the Reality… • This chapter has one year to improve dramatically • Dean and I are working together to identify the areas of concern • We are also working to construct criterion that will determine success and failure

  5. Those are the Facts,This is the Reality… • However this chapter only has the Fall semester to show significant improvement before placed into trusteeship • Trusteeship is when the chapter is taken over by the alumni, specifically a Trustee Board of 7 alumni

  6. Trusteeship • Trustee Board conducts a membership review • Board then selects an executive council • Finances are taken over by board and no money is spent without board approval • E-council must meet with board regularly • Board will determine criteria for when chapter can resume normal operation

  7. What Next • We have lost leverage. • SVSU is no longer privileged to have Sigma Pi…we our privileged just to still be recognized as an organization at SVSU. • We have lost our strongest allies • This is not a threat, this is real

  8. What Next • Strategic Plan • “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity” • Conduct a membership review right now • “It only takes a fraction to destroy a fraternity, but 100% to maintain”

  9. What Next • No more worrying about the other guys • “Winners find ways, losers make excuses” • Need to find the fire again • “More than a name…it’s a state of mind” • Alumni are here, just need to ask

  10. What Next “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do” “We are not here to see through each other, but to see one another through”
