Course: Biology AHSGE Objective #3 Photosynthesis and Respiration
AHSGE Objective #3 • Identify reactants and products associated with photosynthesis and cellular respiration and the purpose of these two processes.
List of Key Concepts: • #3-1. Greek / Latin Word Parts • #3-2. Photosynthesis • #3-3. Cellular Respiration • #3-4. Fermentation
#3-1. Greek / Latin Word Parts • auto- • chloro- • hetero- • photo- • -phyll • troph-
#3-1. Greek / Latin Word Parts • auto- self • chloro- green • hetero- other, different • photo- light • -phyll leaf • troph- feeding
#3-2. Photosynthesis • process in which light energy is converted to chemical energy • carried out by autotrophs • location: chloroplasts • equation: carbon dioxide + water + sunlight oxygen + glucose Make sure know the difference between reactants and products!
#3-3. Cellular Respiration (AKA: Aerobic Respiration) • process used to release energy in food to make ATP / burning glucose to release energy • carried out by heterotrophs and autotrophs • location: mitochondria • equation: oxygen + glucose carbon dioxide + water + energy (ATP) Make sure know the difference between reactants and products!
#3-4. Fermentation • AKA: anaerobic respiration • respiration in the absence of oxygen / burning glucose when oxygen is NOT present • may produce lactic acid or alcohol • The process of fermentation is used while making friendship bread
Activity: Energy Currency of a Cell • People use currency/money to function in today’s society in order to purchase basic needs…In a similar fashion, a cell needs ENERGY in order to function and survive. • The energy required for cell processes is produced in the mitochondria of the cell during the process of respiration! • During this activity you will substitute common parts found on a typical dollar bill (our form of currency) with characteristics of respiration and energy/ATP production.
Quiz AL COS #3 (Photosynthesis and Respiration) • Define the word “reactants” in your words. • Define the word “product” in your own words. • Identify the location within the cell that photosynthesis occurs. • Record the equation for photosynthesis. • Identify the location within the cell that respiration occurs. • Record the equation for respiration. • Identify the 2 types of respiration. • List as many differences between the 2 types of respiration that you can think of.
