  2. Human nature is fundamentally spiritual and spiritual principles underlie the essential elements of a peaceful, prosperous and advancing civilization. Organizing Principle

  3. Spiritual Reality The material world is a reflection of spiritual conditions and until the spiritual conditions are changed, there can be no lasting change for the better in material affairs

  4. True Civilization True civilization does not arise merely from material progress, but rather is defined by and based upon the transcendent values that hold society together

  5. True Civilization- Basis Shared beliefs and moral values unite people into communities and give tangible direction and meaning to individual and collective life

  6. Moral Principles Much like the physical principles that govern the material world, the social world, too, is governed by moral principles, which underlie the functioning of an ordered society

  7. Complexity of Issues The interrelatedness of challenges stemming from the critical issues facing the world today calls for the articulation of principles capable of guiding analysis, decision-making and the development of indicators to measure progress.

  8. Fail to address the underlying root issue, the moral and spiritual development of mankind beginning with the individual. Material Solutions

  9. "No matter how far the material world advances, it cannot establish the happiness of mankind. Only when material and spiritual civilization are linked and coordinated will happiness be assured.” Bahá'u'lláh

  10. Prosperity The presence/abundance of those ethical, social and material resources needed to develop the moral, intellectual and social capacities of individuals, communities and institutions

  11. Resources • Ethical resources refer to a framework of moral values and ethical principles and an accompanying program for their implementation. • Social resources refer to support structures such as the family, the community and the nation.

  12. Capacities • Moral capacities refer for example, to moral reasoning, service to humanity, non-adversarial decision-making; cultivation of dignity and self-worth. Together, these capabilities enlarge an individual’s capacity for moral action. • Social capacities encompass, for example, parenting and leadership skills. Together, these capabilities enlarge an individual’s capacity to advance the well-being of his or her community.

  13. Prosperity Prosperity begins with and within the individual. The degree to which individuals have the freedom, opportunity and conditions to develop and manifest their moral, intellectual and social capacities, individually and collectively is the degree to which a particular society will become prosperous.

  14. Spiritually-Based Indicators “These indicators are based on universal principles which are essential to the development of the human spirit and, therefore to individual and collective progress. These measures emerge from a vision of development in which material progress serves as a vehicle for spiritual and cultural advancement.”

  15. Foundational Principles(Examples from “Valuing Spirituality”) • Unity in Diversity • Equity and Justice • Equality of the Sexes • Trustworthiness and Moral Leadership • Independent Investigation of Truth

Indices that measure the quality, direction and results of individual spiritual well-being • The degree to which spiritual education and moral development opportunities exist in society. • The degree to which the concept of service as a path to individual development is both verbalized and practiced for social transformation – increase in leisure time and the percentage of leisure time devoted to service. • Equitable treatment of women including their right to time for personal and spiritual development.

Indices that measure the quality, direction and results of individual spiritual well-being • The degree to which individuals and the community have skills, competencies, knowledge and opportunity for sustainable livelihoods. • Money spent on philanthropy (measured as a percentage of income) measured for individuals and nations.

  18. Indices that measure the quality, direction and results of community well-being • Degree to which moral leadership is perceived to be expected and evident in all walks of life. • Degree to which an orientation of service to the common good is reflected in policy and programs. • The degree to which all members of society have equal access to programs and benefits.

  19. Indices that measure the quality, direction and results of community well-being • The degree to which the promotion of individual and collective transformation is reflected in all development programs. • Degree to which beauty (natural and man-made) is accessible in society and the degree to which the arts and literature flourish and provide a moral compass for society.
