Summarizing ReadingsWhat’s the argument? • Abbey • Abbey illustrates, through his example of Utah as one of the most beautiful places on the Earth, that man is capable of connecting with nature through a personal relationship with it allowing for a sustainable home. • Wilson • Wilson discusses the green Earth and the issue of loss of biodiversity in the natural environment. He argues that in search for understanding we destroy creation and our past. • Chapple • Chapple argues that even though bugs are a nuisance, they are necessary to our survival. • Bingham • Bingham, a wealthy educated land-owner, expresses boldly that the future of this gift of land will only flourish under a female’s nurturing love and appreciation. • Silko • The Hopi’s understanding that everyone and everything comes from and goes back to the Earth gives them a unique perspective on sustainability. • Hogan • Life is inter-dependant

Identify Appeals • What is the text doing???? • How does the writer appeal to the reader? • What is effective, persuasive, etc.? • Abbey • Descriptive lang (pathos) • personal experiences; “my poor mother raised 5 children..” (168) (pathos-feel sorry for him; ethos-why he has credibility) • Life in the man-made trailer vs beauty of nature; “there is even a shower stall…” (168) • Chapple • Humor (pathos) • Uses scientific language which…(logos) • How insects effect our lives; “there would be no flowers without insects…The two ‘evolved’ together” (190) • Prior knowledge of reader is often necessary for logos to be effective. School of thought for science. • Silko • Personification of the Earth and sky allows me to connect to her example (pathos)-connection; “The Pueblos believed the Earth and sky were sisters…”(174)

Response Papers Analyze multiple peer response papers to prep for revising • What are the elements of the response paper? • Summary • Synthesis of texts • Introduction, background • Response, entering the conversation, voice of writer • Quotes & Significance of them • Discussion of Rhetorical Strategies • Where are they? • Beginning? Middle? Up front? • Where are they most effective? • Summaries are most effective up front. • Synthesis of readings up front alerts readers to what will be examined • Responding throughout the paper is more effective than summarizing for a page and then responding for another.
