  1. Charles Dickens

  2. Charles Dickens was one of the most influential and greatest novelists/writers • . He was born on 7 February 1812 in Land port (Portsea), • Charles was second of the eight children in the Dickens family

  3. . From early age of his childhood, Charles was interested in reading books and had his own small collection of books in his room. • He read books of Robinson Crusoe, Roderick Random, Humphrey Clinker, and Don Quixote etc.

  4. From 1837 till 1841, Charles took on writing novels, but his novels were published in small parts instead of whole of a novel at a time. • He wrote novels like Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickelby and Old Curiosity Shop. From 1841 to 1860, Charles wrote few more novels, which were very much based on his personal experience.

  5. Till 1868, he traveled to many places and gave lectures in US and England. • While doing all this, he continued his work and wrote numerous novels, books and plays. • His work includes fiction, mystery, satirical writing on the social condition etc.

  6. Charles died on June 9, 1870 at Gadshill Place, near Rochester, • Dickens' novels are made into films and television adaptations, the internet is full of Dickens, and so is the academic world. • This course at the English Department at Aalborg University, Denmark will look at Dickens through different filters: readings of a selection of novels, the mechanisms of film and television adaptations, digital Dickens texts, and postmodern recycling of Dickens.

  7. Summary of Oliver Twist • London in the 1830s was no place to be if you were a hungry ten-year-old boy, an orphan without friends or family, with no place to go to, and only a penny in your pocket to buy a piece of bread. • But Oliver Twist finds some friends – Fagin, the Artful Dodger, and Charley Bates. They give him food and shelter, and play games with him, but it is not until some days later that Oliver finds out what kind of friends they are and what kind of ‘games’ they play...

  8. Oliver Twist is an orphan whose mother had died when Oliver was born. Oliver is raised in a workhouse because his mother wasn’t married; and he had no relatives.

  9. Characters • Oliver Twist , Fagin , Jack Dawkins (The Artful Dodger) , Charley Bates , Nancy , Mr. Bumble , Mr. Brownlow , Mr. Sowerberry , Mrs. Sowerberry .

  10. He has a lot of books • Martin chuzzlewit • A christmas carol • A tale of two cities • Oliver twist

  11. SUMMARY OF A TALE OF CİTİES • The Tale of Two Cities examines the French Revolution. • Charles Dickens echoes the fear of many that England’s indifference to the impoverished during the Industrial Revolution would lead to an uprising of the poor as it had in France. • In this viewpoint, he is partially right, as many riots did occur in England, though the British Army stopped them, causing numerous deaths and more suffering.

  12. His last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, was unfinished. • His contemporaries, and later critics have admired Dickens’ complex characters and plots.
