Understanding Basic Geometry Concepts: Lines, Angles, and Planes

This lesson explores fundamental geometry concepts including lines, angles, and planes. Key definitions include a straight line as a collection of points extending infinitely in opposite directions, a straight angle measuring 180 degrees, and parallel lines that never intersect. We also cover various types of angles, such as acute angles (0° to 90°) and obtuse angles (90° to 180°). Additionally, learn about rays, segments, and the properties of intersecting and perpendicular lines. Understand the significance of geometry in understanding shapes and spatial relationships.

  1. Vocabulary Review Course 2 Lesson 7

  2. Line A straight collection of points extending in opposite directions without an end

  3. Straight Angle An angle that measures 180o and thus forms a straight line.

  4. Parallel Lines Lines in the same plane that do not intersect

  5. Plane A flat surface that has no boundaries.

  6. Ray A part of a line that begins at a point and continues without end in one direction.

  7. Acute Angle An angle whose measure is between 0 0 and 90 0.

  8. Point An exact position on a line, on a plane, or in space.

  9. Right Angle An angle that forms a square corner and measures 90 0.

  10. Intersect To share a common point or points.

  11. Segment A part of a line with two distinct points.

  12. Perpendicular Lines Two lines that intersect at right angles.

  13. Skew Lines Lines that do not intersect and are not in the same plane.

  14. Angle The opening that is formed when two lines, rays, or segments intersect.

  15. Vertex A point of an angle where two or more lines, rays, or segments meet.

  16. Oblique Lines Lines that are neither horizontal nor vertical, but intersect.

  17. Geometry A major branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, sizes, and other properties of figures.

  18. Obtuse Angle An angle whose measure is between 90 0 and 180 0 .
