  2. Agenda • Background and Introduction • Alex • Functionality and Model Characteristics • Kyle • List of Parts and Project Costs • Ted • Challenges, Solutions and Changes • Frank

  3. Background Penrod (Penry) Pooch is the mild-mannered janitor at the police station, but when trouble looms he is only a file cabinet away from transforming into Hong Kong Phooey, Number One Super Crimefighter! He hasn’t mastered every lesson from his Kung Fu Correspondence Course, however, so he is often helped by his cat Spot and his ever-adaptable Phooeymobile.

  4. Introduction • Other robots can try to outdo him, but with his incredible Kung Fu ability and superior wits Hong Kong Phooey puts them all to shame. Robots beware our Hong Kong Phooey is done and dangerous.

  5. Functionality

  6. Model Characteristics • When the motion detector is activated, HKP proceeds with a downward chop, followed by a kick to whoever is attacking. • The motion sensor has three connections: Ground, +V, and Out. • The stamp reads in the value of the Out pin connected to the motion sensor. If the value is 1, the sensor detects motion and the program enters a command that triggers the servo connected to the arm and the DC motor connected to the leg.

  7. Model Characteristics (cont.) • When thermistor senses an increase in temperature, the LEDs light up. LEDs will then turn off when the “situation cools down.” • The thermistor is connected to a 1 kΩ resistor (which is connected to the input pin) and a 0.1 µF capacitor, which is connected to +V. • The Stamp’s RCTIME command measures the RC discharge time, and when the thermistor heats to a chosen value, a command lighting the LEDs is triggered. Another command turning off the LEDs is triggered when the thermistor cools down again.

  8. Model Characteristics (cont.) • When the phototransistor is activated, Kung Fu music blares before HKP looks to see who is coming and unleashes a sideways chop. • The phototransistor is connected to a 1kΩ resistor (which is connected to the input pin) and another 1kΩ resistor, which is connected to a 0.1µF capacitor, connected to +V. • When the phototransistor is completely covered, the program reads an input of 0, and this triggers a program that runs the servo connected to the arm, the DC motor connected to the head, and the speaker.

  9. List of Parts Used • 1 Basic Stamp chip • 1 LC293D chip • 2 Servos • 2 DC Motors • 2 LEDs • 1 Thermistor • 1 Phototransistor • 1Motion detector • 1 Speaker • 1 Voltage Regulator (MC7805) • Resistors: 1kΩ *3, 560Ω *2, 15Ω *2 • Capacitors 0.22 µF *1, 0.1 µF *3, 10 µF *2 • 1 9V battery and connection • Hong Kong Phooey action figure • Custom Wood Base • Screws • Wires • Duct tape • Electrical tape • Steel wire (coat hanger) • Thread

  10. Project Costs

  11. Challenges • Wires staying connected • Proto board bad connections • Complexity of wiring and circuitry • Allocated RAM on Basic Stamp • Torque on DC Motors • Physical connections between parts and motors/servos • Adjusting voltage for servos (9V to 5V) • Sensitivity of sensors

  12. Solutions to Challenges • Wires staying connected • Soldered wires to parts • Proto board bad connections • Test Pins • Complexity of wiring and circuitry • Insert Basic Stamp into Proto Board • Allocated RAM on Basic Stamp • Modify code to include loops • Torque on DC Motors • Use counter weights to center balance • Physical connections between parts and motors/servos • Use a lot of Duct tape • Adjusting voltage for servos (9V to 5V) • Insert voltage regulator into circuit • Sensitivity of sensors • Modify code and adjust placement

  13. End Result A bad ass crime fighting dog.

  14. Additional Changes to HKP • None, he’s a bad ass bot.

  15. But if we Must… • Have board printed on small circuit to place within to hide • Add walking motion • Add voice feature ($$$) • Make smart enough to use his Kung Fu skills against other helpless wussy mechatronic pets while left alone in GM lab
