  2. Quick Write: • If You don’t know just guess 1. What is the center of our solar system? 2. What is the closet body (planet or moon) that circles Earth? 3. What is the next closest body that orbits Earth? 4. What is the 3rd closest body that orbits Earth? Hopefully you said that Earth is at the center and other planets orbit around it. The Moon is the closest body that orbits Earth As everyone knows, Mercury is the closest planet that orbits the Earth If you can’t name the third planet that orbits Earth, you may have the wrong information. Let’s quickly review how all this works…

  3. Scientific Revolution From 1550-1700 By: Mr. Brady

  4. Why we know these truths. • All serious scientists today know that the Earth doesn’t move and that the planets revolve around Earth. • Through the use of reason and critical thinking, the Greek thinker Ptolemy proved around 100 CE that the Earth is at the center of the universe.

  5. Ptolmely’s Model Ptolmey Greek Scientist The moon is the closest to Earth, then Mercury, Venus, the sun, Mars, Jupiter, and finally, Saturn. Hopefully, you learned this in your Medieval Science Class

  6. Wait, you mean to tell me this is incorrect? • In all actuality, the Sun is the center of our solar system and planets (including Earth) revolve around it. • Although Ptolemy is incorrect, this Geo-Centric theory was believed by almost everyone in the Universe. • This theory that the Earth was the center of the Universe is known as Geo-centrism. • Was this frustrating to hear that Earth was the center of the Universe? Why?

  7. Scientific Revolution Empathy • Imagine you were a scientist during the 1550s-1700 and you knew that a theory believed to be true was absolutely wrong… • How might you try and persuade people? • How do you think it would feel to have everyone tell you that you were wrong even though you knew you were right? Empathy: Ability to recognize feelings of another person.

  8. Lesson Objective • In this lesson, you will learn about the scientists that led the Scientific Revolution, and about their new theories, discoveries, and inventions.

  9. Scientific Revolution • The Scientific Revolution: Period between 1550-1700s when individuals began to question the conclusions of Aristotle and other traditional sources. • Developed the Scientific Method to help them uncover truths accurately and scientifically.

  10. How do we know something is true? Before the Scientific Revolution - Truth was based on Biblical and Church teachings. - There was no organized method for conducting Research • After the Scientific Revolution • - Truth was based on careful observation and use of reason • - Scientific Method used for research.

  11. Nicolaus Copernicus 1473-1543 -Developed the Helio-centric model of the universe -The sun is the center, and the other planets, including the earth, revolve around it -“He feared persecution or even death at the hands of Church leaders.”

  12. Tycho Brahe 1546-1601 -Danish Scientist from Denmark -Known for making accurate records -Plotted over 750 stars and his observations helped Kepler -“Naked-Eye” Astronomer

  13. Johannes Kepler 1571-1630 -German mathematician and astronomer -Used Brahe’s data in order to discover the planetary orbits -Planets have an elliptical orbit, not circular

  14. BFF’s For Life!

  15. Galileo Galilei 1564-1642 -Tried for heresy for publishing his ideas about the planets orbiting the sun -Had to reject his findings about the universeand state that the earth was the center of the universe

  16. -Galileo discovered a mathematical formula showing that objects fall at the same speed -Galileo used the telescope to study astronomy

  17. . Why might the Church not have liked scientists uncovering truths?

  18. Isaac Newton 1642-1727 -Discovered gravity, which holds planets in orbit -He showed that light is made up of all colors of the rainbow

  19. Newton’s Laws of Motion First Law: “A body at rest, will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external force.” Second Law: Force = Mass x Acceleration Third Law: “To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

  20. Rene Descartes 1596-1650 -A French philosopher -Believed that nothing should be accepted as true if it was not proven to be true -“I think, therefore I am.”

  21. The Scientific Method -Both Bacon and Descartes contributed to the creation of the Scientific Method. -The Scientific Method is a step by step process for performing experiments and research.

  22. Hypothesis -A solution that the scientist proposes to solve the problem -An educated guess! -A hypothesis has not be proven!

  23. Scientific Revolution Facebook Profile • You will research 1 famous scientist of the Scientific Revolution and create a Facebook profile for your individual. • In it you will include: • Profile Pic • Information about your individual, Likes, and Friends • Status updates • Posts made by other FB users during the Scientific Revolution • And various ads that go along with the time.

  24. Learning Objectives 1-4: 1- Ptolemy 2- Nicolaus Copernicus 3- Tycho Brahe 4- Johannes Kepler A philosopher who created a map that did not contain the Americas. Created the helio-centric model of the universe, and feared persecution for those ideas. A Danish scientist who charted more than 750 stars of our universe. Discovered that planets orbited elliptically.

  25. Learning Objectives 5-6: 5- Galileo Galilei 6- Newton and his laws An astronomer that created a mathematical equation explaining all objects fall at the same speed. He was forced to reject by the Catholic Church on his findings of a helio-centric universe. Discovered gravity and that light is a combination of all colors. Created three Laws of Motion. The third law: To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

  26. Learning Objectives 7-8: 7- Rene Descartes 8- Scientific Method A French philosopher who believed that nothing should be accepted as true unless proven to be true. A step by step process for performing experiments and research. Created using both Bacon and Descartes ideas.

  27. Main Learning Objectives • How did our thinking evolve to the Scientific Revolution? (In other words describe the steps that got us to this point? • Why was the Scientists of the Scientific Revolution a threat to the Church?

  28. Homework: Due 9/28 • Chapter 6: P.194 Questions 3,4,6,7
